#162 Nice lunch at Indian restaurant Shalimar, Bruges

restaurant review #162. Shalimar is an Indian restaurant at the edge of the city. It is located just outside the Gentpoort, in Assebroek. It was already 5 years ago that we had been to Shalimar. Since then, the restaurant has changed owners.

After our lunch, we paid a visit to the new shop of Origin’O just across the street. A very nice shop, see our impressions here.

There are several vegetarian dishes mentionned seperately on the menu (section ‘vegetarian’) of which most seem to be vegan. We inquired when ordering, and the waiter was very knowledgeable about the ingredients of the dishes.
The naan was said to be with yoghurt, so we just had plain rice with the main dishes.

We were served a small appetizer with the drinks. As the waiter was putting it on the table we saw a white drizzled line on the snacks, and at the same time he realised it too and said it was with yoghurt and would bring something else. Which followed shortly. It was a very nice appetizer, nice presentation too, with chickpeas and potatoes:

This is what we had for lunch:

  • Vegetable pakora, 8,50€
  • Vegetable samosa, 7,50€
  • Baingan Bharta (14€) tandoori grilled eggplants with onion and tomato curry
  • Dal Tarka (14,50€), Lentils with garlic, ginger and red pepper (this dish is normally with dairy, but it was left out)

We loved the food (not too hot, still edible for our taste buds!). Nice presentation too (lovely stoneware dishes).

We had lunch in a calm and relaxed atmosphere. There was plenty of space between the tables, and the chairs are covered with cushions, so that was quite comfortable. There is a downstairs room and an upstairs restaurant room, and there also seemed to be plenty of seating places behind the bar, in the back of the restaurant. One thing that was a bit annoying was the radio music from the kitchen interferring with music in the restaurant room.

Toilets are upstairs on 2nd floor, basic but clean. There were paper towels to dry ones hands.

We had a lovely lunch. Very good value for money! And friendly service.
Definitely want to visit again! And good to know: Shalimar also offers take-away.
