A visit to zero waste shop Refill, Oudenburg

shop review #57 – Refill is a new zero waste shop in Oudenburg (close to Ostend). I was here with a friend a couple of weeks ago. Refill has a large collection of dispensers with nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and other bulk products. Also products like agave andΒ cleaning products to refill.Β So bring your own boxes and bottles to fill! Also some vegan products in the fridge (burgers). Refill also sells vegan cake and muffins, and vegan labelled candy. I bought some nuts and vegan candy. First you have to weigh your container at the counter, label it, then fill it up, so the weight of the container isn’t included in the price. Also bought chocolate cake and a berry muffin. Very nice. Refill is a bright and modern shop. Everything seemed newely renovated. Pity it is not accessible though (several large steps to get in). Friendly lady at the counter. Refill is definitely a great addition to Oudenburg! Refill, location Hoogstraat 12, 8460 Oudenburg 0496 86 06 14 website:Β https://www.refilloudenburg.be/ See theΒ list of shops, on The …

A vegan waffle place in Brussels: Veganwaf’

Shop review #56 – This new vegan waffle place just opened a couple of days ago. VeganWaf’ is not a tea room or restaurant where one can sit down, but a walk in food stall in the Galerie Agora, near the Central Market.Β On ground level, about 20 meter from the entrance. We were there on the first day it opened. VeganWaf’ only offers one type of waffle, which resembles the Liegeois type of waffle (sugary waffle). Waffles are gluten free and vegan and cost 3,50€ On the opening day, they only offerend banana or chocolate sauce as a topping, but I’ve seen that meanwhile they have added some more options. We loved the waffles! Great to have this new addition in the city center of Brussels. #205 Nice vegan lunch at conceptstore All About Eve, Hasselt

restaurant review #205 / Shop review #55 –Β All about Eve is a vegan concept store in the city center of Hasselt. It’s a combination of a restaurant and a shop, that sells cosmetics and body and care products. The restaurant is all vegan, except for dairy used for coffee and drinks (on request). All About Eve is just next to the main shopping street, on a very central, but nonetheless quiet location. We visited a couple of months ago, during Summer. There is a small terrace in front, and at the back of the downstairs level, and then inside seating is on the first floor. Menu is quite simple, and besides the standard menu, there are some specials noted on a little chalkboard (in the form of a teapot) on each table. We ordered the asparagus soup (which was soup of the day), with bread and hummus (7,5€). And the oven baked stuffed bell peppers (13€). Next to that, the tempeh salad with avocado (8,5€). And we had pancakes with pear syrup for dessert (7,5€)! …

Cinnamon rolls, vegan cheesepie and donuts, vegan bakery Peas, Hasselt

shop review #54 – Peas is a veganΒ bakery in city center of Hasselt. Peas was previously on another location on the edge of the city, but had no storefront then. This shop in the city center of Hasselt opened in June. We stopped by shortly after it had opened end June, on our way back home after a holiday. There were cinnamon rolls with several flavours (speculoos, chocolate, classic, pistache, ..), carrot cake and mini cheese cakes in several flavours. There are no tables to have a cup of coffee (plenty of space though). We asked why not, and the lady replied that would mean they are a different type of bussiness (‘horeca’ and not a shop). The lady serving us was very reserved, definitely not in for some chit chat or a smile. We bought some cakes, rolls and donuts. They were nice, but very dense.Β They are mostly all in the same ‘cube shaped style’ and have a dense cheese like texture, and on the expensive side (most connamon rolls 3,50€; cupcakes 2,50€ or …

Vegan cake at Thee met een Verhaal, Ostend

Shop review #53 – Ostend may be self-labelled the ‘Queen of the Coastal Cities’ in Belgium (‘De Koningin der badsteden’), but it certainly doesn’t hit top of the list when it comes down to finding places that serve vegan food! A couple of weeks ago, I did discover a cosy little tea house in the city center, that serves vegan cake: Thee met een Verhaal (Tea with a Story).Β  Yeah, what a pleasant surprise! Thee met een Verhaal serves tea (d’oh! πŸ˜‰ ), and also has a similar tea house in Aarschot. They also have some cakes on offer (of which one at least is always vegan – cake or pie from Madam Bakster). That day it was with chocolate and peanuts. Served in a lovely antique cup with mathcing dish. Really enjoyed it! Service was very friendly too, and if you want to talk tea, this is definitely the place! Thee met een Verhaal is a cosy little place, near the Casino Kursaal. A great addition to Ostend! Thee met een Verhaal, location Van …

T-shirts, sweaters and more at eco-vegan shop Leeloo, Bruges

Shop review #52 – Leeloo is a clothes and accessories shop in the city center of Bruges. It is located in the Sint Jakobsstraat, which is very close to the central market. It exists since about 20 years, and has always focused on selling sustainable, eco-friendly clothing! In April 2018, Leeloo announced on their facebook page that from then on, all products at the store are animal free! Yeah! So shortly afterwards, I went to pay them a visit. The shop is well packed, with a great selection of T-shirts, pants, sweaters, …Β There are also some body and care products and some bags. The shop has a nice modern ‘urban’ look, and several mirrors give it a more spacious impression. There’s also a wall with a nice collection of stickers. I looked around for a while, and then boughts some T-shirts. The only thing that withheld me from shopping a bit longer, was the very loud techno music (I can only describe it as a mixture between house and Kraftwerk πŸ˜€ ) which was driving …

A look inside shop Holland & Barrett, Bruges

Shop review #51 – Holland & Barrett is an international Chain (UK based) with also several shops in Belgium and the Netherlands. Holland & Barrett sells “a wide range of vitamins, minerals, health supplements, specialist foods and natural beauty products.” (taken from their website). There is also a Holland & Barrett shop in Bruges, in the Noordzandstraat (not far from ‘t Zand and the Dweersstraat).Β  I only recently discovered that H&B have a decent range of vegan labelled body and care products (e.g. shampoo, bath and shower wash, toothpaste, face cream), and now regularly do some shopping there. They also have some food items (nuts, special flours), and a wide range of vitamines and other supplements (vegan vitamine D for example). Here are some more pics from inside the Holland & Barrett in Bruges.
