#42 Our lunch at De Vegetarische Traiteur, Amsterdam (NL) ****

Restaurant review #42 – Walking through de Rozengracht to the city center of Amsterdam, we accidently stumbled upon De Vegetarische Traiteur. A bright spacious place, where you can either buy snacks to take away, or be seated to have your meal on the spot. Looking at the products in the counter and the freezer (which you can also buy to take home), we noticed they have a large variety of mock meats. They are from the brand Martin’s Choice, which upon asking appears to be their own home brand (and 100% plant based). So they have a lot of vegan options (or dishes which can be served vegan – for example replacing the cheese with a vegan cheese). Cool!

We met up with friends later, and decided to go back to have lunch at De Vegetarische Traiteur.
This is what we ordered (don’t be misled by the ‘meat’ names, yes, these are vegan dishes!):

Some snacks and soup as an appetizer:

Soup of the day, 4,5€

Soup of the day – tomato soup, 4,5€

Nuggets, 'meatballs', bitterballs, fishsticks (16pieces), 9€

Nuggets, ‘meatballs’, bitterballs, ‘fish’sticks (with mustard), 7,50€

sausage roll 1,75€

Thai 'chicken' salad with cashews and sweet sour pineapple, 6,5€

Club sandwich with Asian marinated chicken, guacamole and bean sprouts, 7€

Pita shoarma 6€

'cheese' burger, 6,50€

For drinks the waiter suggested maybe a fresh juice, which we thought was a great idea. We had carrot orange with ginger, each 3,75€.  A demi bottle of water was 2€.

All in all, an enjoyable lunch, and good value for money (only the soup is a little bit overpriced IMO). Friendly service.
I wouldn’t eat this fast food style every day, but every once in a while we don’t mind a hamburger or pita  🙂 And even if you don’t like the deep fried stuff, there are also several salads to choose from!

I see you have excellent vegan eateries in the Netherlands. BTW I’ve a friend from Middelburg. He’s not vegan though. Not yet anyway. I do enjoy your posts and pictures, it has me wishing such places were here in the redneck belt of the USA (Indiana / Kentucky).
