#255 Nice vegan lunch at Japanese resto Origami, Esch-sur-Alzette (Lux)

restaurant review #255 – Japanese restaurant Origami is located at the back of the new shopping center. There is a large outdoor terrace, but we were here on a rainy day in September, so went inside. We were in the area for the International Animal Rights Conference, which takes places every year in September in Esch-sur-Alzette. On this edition I gave a presentation about ‘Representations of Other Animals. About Vegan Turkey and Voiceless Animals‘. We were asked if we wanted to sit at the carroussel, but declined (don’t want to see all those animal based dishes going by). There are plenty of other seatings in the restaurant room, it’s very spacious.

#164 Asian style fastfood at Vegesana, Barcelona

restaurant review #164 – Vegesana is a vegetarian restaurant in the city center of Barcelona. Not far from Plaça Catalunya. Vegesana is an asian style restaurant, and has lots of faux meat dishes on the menu. The restaurant has a small entrance and a small front room, but it there’s a second room at the back of the restaurant, which we were asked to take place. The menu is very extensive, with lots of faux meats. Hard to choose! Most items are vegan, some dishes are with egg, but can also be ordered without eggs. We were immediately served this small snack as an appetizer: This is what we ordered: tofu brochettes (3,95€) tempura (8,90€) tofu dish (8,90€) with noodles on the side (noodles were said to be without eggs)  (5,50€) vegan gambas (9,50€) with rice on the side (5,90€) Glass of water was 2€ (no large bottles available). The main dishes: The food came very fast, and seemed to be served ‘as was ready’ in the kitchen (strange as the restaurant was hardly full …

#128 Lovely dinner at vegetarian resto Leaf, Rotterdam (NL)

Restaurant review #128 – Leaf is a vegetarian restaurant in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Most of the menu is vegan, there are only a handful of options which are non-vegan. The restaurant used to be in Scheveningen, but moved to Rotterdam recently. The food at Leaf seems to be a mixture of Asian inspired recipes (Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc). We visited a couple of weeks ago, with friends. We had made a reservation, but that didn’t seem to be necessary, as there was still plenty of space available (it was a Friday evening). Restaurant Leaf is a spacious place, with a large terrace out front. Although it was a nice Summer evening, it was too windy to sit outside. Inside there’s a downstairs section and some more seating on the balcony upstairs. It was hard to choose from the extensive menu! We’re not used to having so many options 😉 The non-vegan items are clearly indicated as such on the menu card, and the spicy ones are marked with stars. Restaurant Leaf offers a lot of ‘faux’ …

#42 Our lunch at De Vegetarische Traiteur, Amsterdam (NL) ****

Restaurant review #42 – Walking through de Rozengracht to the city center of Amsterdam, we accidently stumbled upon De Vegetarische Traiteur. A bright spacious place, where you can either buy snacks to take away, or be seated to have your meal on the spot. Looking at the products in the counter and the freezer (which you can also buy to take home), we noticed they have a large variety of mock meats. They are from the brand Martin’s Choice, which upon asking appears to be their own home brand (and 100% plant based). So they have a lot of vegan options (or dishes which can be served vegan – for example replacing the cheese with a vegan cheese). Cool! Update – see below –  We met up with friends later, and decided to go back to have lunch at De Vegetarische Traiteur. This is what we ordered (don’t be misled by the ‘meat’ names, yes, these are vegan dishes!): Some snacks and soup as an appetizer: For drinks the waiter suggested maybe a fresh juice, which we thought was …
