#258 Light lunch at Schenkers, Apeldoorn (NL)

restaurant review #258 – Schenkers is a cafΓ©/restaurant in the city center of Apeldoorn. It is a cosy place, with a very large terrace. We were here a couple of months ago in Summer, during our holiday in the Netherlands. It was a nice Summer day, not too hot, not too cold, and we sat outside on the large terrace next to the restaurant. Schenkers has a handful of vegan options standardly available. Although the two girls serving the place were working as fast as they could (and were very friendly) ordering and serving (for all in all rather simple dishes) took quite a while. So I think they are understaffed. The vegan bitterballen, which we ordered as an apptizer with our drinks, came together with the main dishes. The burger came in a slice of bread, which was a bit disappointing. It tasted good though. The falafel bowl was nice. All very reasonably priced (cheap actually). The restaurant room is wheelchair accessible. Didn’t see a wheelchair accessible toilet. The toilet was basic, but clean. …

#252 Pizza with a view: Mediamatic ETEN, Amsterdam (NL)

restaurant review #252 – Mediamatic ETEN is the restaurant of Mediamatic Biotoop, an arts center organising lectures, workshops and art projects, focusing on nature, biotechnology and art+science. It is located in a greenhouse on the waterfront with a nice view over Amsterdam. It is not a vegan restaurant, but they do have a lot of vegan options (on some evenings all vegan) and many vegetables come from their own greenhouse.

#247 Nice Indonesian rice table at Warung Adinda, Hilversum

restaurant review 247 – Warung Adinda – the name kind of gives it away πŸ˜‰ – is an Indonesian restaurant in the city center of Hilversum in the Netherlands. There are plenty of Indonesian restaurants in The Netherlands (given the historical link with the country), but unfortunately they are a rarity in Belgium. So whenever we are in the Netherlands, we try to go to an Indonesian restaurant. This is from a visit a couple of weeks ago, when we spent a couple of days in the Netherlands on holiday.

#246 Nice dinner at Rode Peper en Basilicum, Ede (NL)

restaurant review #246 – Rode Peper en Basilicum is located in the city center of Ede, near De Hoge Veluwe in the Netherlands. I had seen online that they have some vegan options and so I made a reservation, and inquired about their vegan options and this was confirmed. It definitely turned out to be necessary that I had made the reservation, because after we came, the place soon filled up. There are several vegan options clearly labelled on the menu.

#225 Lunch at vegetarian restaurant De Vleesch Lobby, The Hague (NL)

restaurant review #225Β  – De Vleesch Lobby is the restaurant from De Vegetarische Slager (‘the vegetarian butcher’), a Dutch brand of vegetarian and vegan products. We were at their restaurant in The Hague for lunch a couple of months ago, with friends. The restaurant is a little bit outside of the city center of The Hague. I was a bit disappointed that the lunch menu only seemed to have rather simple fastfood snack items, as opposed to the dinner menu (with more elaborate dishes). But on the other hand, we were glad to at least be able to have lunch at this restaurant, as many other restaurants seem to be closed for lunch in the Netherlands. As it is the restaurant of De Vegetarische Slager brand, all of their dish contain their products, like ‘kipstuckjes’ (‘chicken’ pieces) or ‘visvrije Mackreel’ (fishfree mackerel). Although I do like to eat their vegan range of products, I have my reservations about naming vegan products as animals or animal parts, as it consolidates an objectifying view on animals (this …

#222 Dinner at vegan resto SNCKBR (Waku Waku), Utrecht (NL)

restaurant review #222 – SNCKBR is a vegan restaurant in the city center of Utrecht, just next to the concert hall Tivoli Vredenburg. We were here a couple of months ago, before going to show at the Tivoli. A couple of weeks ago, SNCKBR has been renamed into Waku Waku. At the time of our visit, the opening hours were not correctly noted on the website. We already passed by at 4PM – expecting it to be open – but they were still setting up tables and told us it would be open at 5PM. So we returned. Although it was still early, the place soon filled up. SNCKBR (Waku Waku) is a spacious place with a nice, newly renovated decor. We had several reviews that service could be slow at SNCKBR (Waku Waku), so we decided not to take an entree or soup. We ordered two mains, a the SNCKBR burger with fries on the side and a BBQ Peking Luck pizza. Luckily, the main dishes came relatively quickly. The pizza was very spicy …
