#123 Three course menu at La Divina Commedia, Louvain

Restaurant review #123 – La Divina Commedia is an Italian restaurant in the city center of Leuven (Louvain), just a step away from the city hall. It’s not an ordinary pasta and pizza place, but offers a more gastronomic and stylish dining experience. La Divina Commedia does not have a vegan menu standardly available. So unfortunately it’s not a place where you can just walk in and order a vegan menu. But I had seen it mentionned in a vegan facebook group as a restaurant where one can order a vegan menu, if requested in advance. I had tried to make a reservation on a previous visit to Louvain at La Divina Commedia, but when I phoned a couple of days in advance, I was told that that would not be possible, and that I should request it at least a week in advance (so they can go buy vegan products). So well before our next visit to Louvain, that’s what I did! This review is from our visit a few weeks ago (Spring 2017). …

A look inside organic shop Origin’O, Louvain

Shop review #34 – Origin’O is a chain of organic stores in Flanders, with nearly 20 shops spreaded throughout the region. They are not supermarkets, but reasonable sized stores, with most often a good offer of vegan products. There is also an Origin’O is Bruges (see one of the earliest posts on The Bruges Vegan).  The one in Bruges will be moving to a bigger location soon, at the edge of the city (see pic below). Whenever we are visiting another city, we like to check out the vegan and/or organic stores to see what they have on offer. I’ve been to the Origin’O in Louvain (near Brussels) a couple of times before, and on our last visit, I took some pics. Please note that it is not a vegan shop, so not all the products on the photos are necessarily vegan. The shop does sell a lot of vegan items that are not so easily found in ‘regular’ shops (vegan yoghurt, tempeh, chocolates, cakes, toothpaste…). The vegetables and fruits section is in a seperate …

#120 Fast food dinner at Loving Hut Veganerie, Louvain (2)

Restaurant review #120 – The Loving Hut Veganerie is a vegan restaurant in Leuven (Louvain, close to Brussels) and part of the international chain of Loving Hut restaurants. There is also a smaller Loving Hut restaurant in Louvain (just around the corner!), and next to those two Belgian Loving Hut restaurants, there is also the Viva Vega! Loving Hut Express, a fast food truck which you can encounter at festivals and other events (for example at Vegan Summer Fest or Fair Festival). We already posted a review of The Loving Hut Veganerie in the beginning of 2016 (see restaurant review #60). The Loving Hut Veganerie is a fastfood type restaurant, with self service: one orders at the counter, where you get an alarm device that notifies you when your order is ready and you get go pick it up at the counter. Afterwards one is supposed to put the trays and trash away. The menu consists of fastfood style dishes, ranging from burgers to wraps, but there are also salads available. There are also several vegan …

#117 Nice lunch at Loving Hut Classic, Louvain

Restaurant Review #117 – The Loving Hut is an international chain of vegan restaurants. We have visited several Loving Huts over the years (in New York, Brighton, Maastricht and Louvain) and despite all holding the same name (and serving no alchol), the cuisine and setting of the respective restaurant varies enormously. This Loving Hut was the first one of two Loving Huts in Louvain (see a review of the other one here), and opened a couple of years ago. I think it was in 2010. We have visited it several times over the years (see also some pics on my Dutch blog Graswortels of a visit way back in 2011 here), but now it had been a while since we last had lunch there. The Loving Hut Classic is near the city center, just a 5 minute walk from the City Hall or the Rector de Somerplein. One thing that immediately caught our eye is that the very uncomfortable white stools have made room for chairs! Yeah! Although still not the most comfy chairs, these are …

#115 Ethiopian dinner at House of Lalibela, Louvain

Restaurant review #115 – House of Lalibela is an Ethiopian restaurant in the city center of Louvain. I had seen House of Lalibela mentioned several times on social media, as a place with vegan options. Over the years, we have passed the restaurant several times. But as that was mostly during the day, and House of Lalibela is only open for dinner, we did not have the chance to go dining here yet. A couple of weeks ago, we stayed overnight in Louvain, so this was a perfect opportunity to go to House of Lalibela for dinner! I telephoned for a reservation, but did not get a response. Shortly after my call, I got a call back from House of Lalibela, so I was able to make the reservation for that same evening. Vegan was said to be no problem. We arrived shortly after the restaurant opened doors, and were welcomed by the lady of the house. She pointed out the vegan options on the menu. They are labelled as vegetarian, but she assured us that they were all vegan and that …

#112 Casual dinner at Bistro Piazza, Louvain (now Grand Café Industrie)

Restaurant review #112 – Bistro Piazza in Louvain (Leuven) is a traditional brasserie style restaurant just opposite the train station of Louvain (So a 15 minute walk from the city center). It is large spacious place (high ceiling) and has a stylish atmosphere. We were here a couple of months ago in December 2016, and there were Christmas decorations up. UPDATE: the Place is now called ‘Grand Café Industrie‘, and has been renovated since. Bistro Piazza is regular (non-vegan) bistro with the usual suspects on the menu: croques, croquettes, spaghetti etc. Since a couple of months, there is also a seperate vegan menu, which is clearly indicated. Even with mention that it is served with vegan bread. I telephone beforehand to make a reservation and inquired about the vegan options. Unfortunately the vegan burger was no longer available (the burger they had used was from Boni – Colruyt and Colruyt changed it and made it non-vegan – so they were still looking for an alternative). The vegan gyros was also not available that evening. Bummer! They did mention …

#107 Nice lunch at vegetarian restaurant Noordoever, Louvain

Restaurant review #107 – Noordoever is a new place at the edge of Louvain, on the north side (opened in 2015). It is close to the docks and the old factories of beer brewing company Stella Artois. The area around Noordoever is nicely renovated, with new appartments and a nice open space for events and get togethers next to the docks. Restaurant Noordoever is a nice spacious place, with large windows and as such very bright. It’s a lovely decor. Some chairs have cushions, which is nice and comfortable. There is also a seperate room for meetings or group lunch. You cannot order a la carte, but there is a buffet with loads of options to choose from. Noordoever is a vegetarian restaurant, but most dishes at the buffet were vegan, which was clearly indicated next to the dishes (also with the ingredients of the dish). The buffet normally starts at 12 o clock, but it was was more like 12.15 when the buffet was ready and all dishes were presented and we could start lunch. For drinks we had a …

#90 – Nice lunch at Vegaverso, Louvain (3)

Restaurant review #90 – Vegaverso is a vegan lunch bar in the city center of Louvain. Vegaverso serves mainly sandwiches, burgers and also some hot dishes like stews or pasta (the menu varies). We’ve been here a couple of times before, and impressions from some of those visits can be seen here (#27) and here (#34). Vegaverso is a lovely charming place, soberly but stylishly decorated, with a relaxed atmosphere. Service by Tilly and her mom is always super friendly. It’s semi-self service: you order at the bar, take your drinks with you, and when your food is ready they bring the order to your table. Our you can also buy to take away. update – see below  — The menu is pretty extensive, with several burgers, wraps, hotdogs to choose from. Also many different vegan sauces, and different types of bread. The combinations are endless! Also a great variety of vegan pastry and cookies. And the menu changes every once in a while too, so there’s always something new to try. We visited Vegaverso again in July for lunch. This is what we had: …

#79 – Nice lunch at Greenway, Louvain ****

Restaurant review #79 – Greenway is a Belgian vegetarian brand (restaurants and products) and was founded by Paul Florizoone in the mid nineties. The first Greenway restaurant opened in Ghent in 1996 and I vividly remember it opening at that time (I worked nearby and was thrilled!). Meanwhile there are three Greenway restaurants in Belgium (Ghent, Louvain and Antwerp) and a take-away at the railway station of Brussels-Midi. I visited the Greenway in Antwerp a couple of weeks ago with a friend, and we had some lovely cakes (see blog here). It’s been a while since I’ve been to the ones in Ghent and Louvain, but we visited the Greenway in Louvain again for lunch recently. The Greenway in Louvain is located in the city center, just a short walk from the town hall. It’s a nicely decorated place, lots of space, modern style. Vegan options are indicated on the menu above the counter and on the large board on the wall, where the daily suggestions are written. We ordered at the counter – where you also get your drinks: a Mexican burger …

#77 – Lovely 3 course vegan menu at Mykene, Louvain (2) ****

Restaurant review #77 – Mykene is a classic restaurant in the city center of Louvain (about 15 minutes from Brussels). We already posted a review of Mykene in 2014. You can see that review here. There are several vegan dishes and also some vegan appetizers standardly available à la carte. Since our last visit, the menu has changed so we tried some new things. This is what we ordered: mushroom carpaccio, pecan cheese, merlot vinegar gel (11,50€) toast with wild mushrooms (15€) And these were our main dishes: jacked potato, stir fried vegetables, sundried tomatoes and almond parmezan (16€) seitan in coconut curry, lentils and basmatic rice (17,50€) The carpaccio of mushrooms was very nice and original. The toast with champignons was also very nice, but way too much as an appetizer. I could easily have this as a main dish. We were already quite stuffed with these starters, before the main dishes came. And these were also very large portions, way too much for us. We tried to eat as much as we could, but even with some …
