#194 Lovely lunch at new resto Organic Vision, Ostend

restaurant review #194 – Organic Vision is a new restaurant in the city center of Ostend. It is located near the main shopping street. Organic Vision is the long awaited successor of De Graankorrel, which was a vegan – macrobiotic restaurant in Ostend, but closed about 2 years ago. Unlike De Graankorel, Organic Vision is not a vegan restaurant. There are however several vegan dishes available (the plat du jour is also always vegan) and all desserts are vegan and sugarfree. And as the name suggests, it is an organic restaurant. Since it opened in the Spring of 2018, I have already visited Organic Vision a couple of times. The restaurant is in a nicely renovated place, with a sober yet fresh and elegant design. There are also seating places outside, just in front of the restaurant, where you can have a relaxed lunch, albeit very close to the touristy heart of Ostend. The vegan plat du jour is 19,60€. Another vegan dish is the chanco-nabe (20,30€). Or if you are not really that hungry, …

A look inside the new Origin’O, Bruges

Shop review #47 – Origin’O is a chain of organic stores in Flanders, with nearly 20 shops spread throughout the region. They are not supermarkets, but reasonable sized stores, with most often a good offer of vegan products. Other reviews of Origin’O shops are here on The Bruges Vegan. The Origin’O in Bruges used to be in the Katelijnestraat, but at the end of 2017 moved to a new location. It is now at the edge of the city, in Assebroek. This is about a 30 minute walk from the heart of Bruges (Market). After our lunch to Indian restaurant Shalimar a couple of weeks ago, which is just 2 minutes away (review will follow), we went to have a look at the new Origin’O store. The new Origin’O is very spacious, bright and modern! And we noticed the same interior design and concept as in the renovated Origin’O in Louvain (see post here). Please note that it is not a vegan shop, so not all the products on the photos are necessarily vegan. The shop does …

#154 Plat du jour at organic shop Vier de Seizoenen, Bruges

restaurant review #154 – shop review #46 Vier de Seizoenen is an organic shop at the edge of Bruges (Assebroek). Vier de Seizoenen literally translates as ‘celebrate the seasons‘. But in Dutch, to celebrate (vieren) also is the word for four, so it also refers to the four seasons of the year. UPDATE SEE BELOW Since September 2017, Vier de Seizoenen serves a vegetarian plat du jour for lunch (on weekdays). Sometimes, the plat du jour is vegan, or can be veganised. It is advisable to call ahead to be sure, although the lady said they can always fix something last minute, since there are many vegan products in the shop. I was here with a friend a couple of weeks ago for lunch. The restaurant room is at the back of the shop. This was our lunch:  Soup: coral lentils and carrot, with coconutcream smoked tofu with sesame seeds, swiss chard and andives, pumpkin puree, salad with oxheart cabbage & olives, potatoes and rozemary tea, with a cookie Lunch total was 21,20€ (apple juice, soup, main dish, …

#40 Our vegan lunch at vegetarian resto Nectar, Kortrijk / Courtrai **

Restaurant review #40 – Nectar is a organic vegetarian restaurant in Kortrijk / Courtrai, a city in the south of Flanders (60km from Bruges). Restaurant Nectar is only open for lunch, during weekdays, a common feature among vegetarian restaurants with a typical ‘plat du jour’ offer (similar vegetarian plat du jour restaurants, which are also only open for lunch are for example De Bron in Bruges, Grenoble in Sint-Niklaas, De Graankorrel in Ostend and Avalon in Ghent). We sometimes jokingly refer to these types of restaurants as ‘toefjesrestaurants‘, because they typically serve a variety of little heaps (=toefjes) of several vegetables and grains on one plate (macrobiotic inspired). As stated above, it is a vegetarian restaurant, and not a vegan restaurant. I had read conflicting posts on social media about whether or not you should ask for vegan in advance (some stating you have to make a reservation and specifically ask for vegan, other saying you can just drop in). We were in Kortrijk some weeks ago and had no set plans for lunch yet, so we decided to …

#17 Restaurant Grenoble, Sint-Niklaas *

Restaurant review #17 – There are some reviews you wish you didn’t have to write. This is one of them. Grenoble is a vegetarian restaurant in Sint-Niklaas, a city in Eastern Flanders, about 75 km from Bruges. The restaurant is located close to the market place of Sint-Niklaas. Restaurant Grenoble does not have an a la carte menu, just soup of the day (2,50€) a plat du jour (small size 10€ or regular size 11€) and dessert (2,50€). We telephoned beforehand to check whether we could get a vegan menu, and that was said to be no problem. We made a reservation for lunch at 1.30 PM on a Sunday (an earlier time wasn’t possible, they were fully booked for lunch). Sunday lunch We were there at 1.30 PM sharp (by that time quite hungry!) and the restaurant was still nearly full. Most people had finished lunch though. We asked the waiter what the soup of the day was, and it was said to be “vegetable soup”. I wouldn’t expect anything else than vegetable soup in a vegetarian restaurant, would …

#16 Restaurant De Bron, Bruges ***

Restaurant review #16 – De Bron is the only vegetarian restaurant in Bruges. It is located in the south of the city center, near the Beguinage and the Minnewaterpark . It is only open during weekdays for lunch, and offers a soup of the day and a plat du jour, which can be ordered in different sizes: baby, mini, medium and super size. Main dishes are veganized upon request. Desserts are mainly non-vegan, except for the soy vanilla pudding. There are also fresly pressed juices available. Most of what’s served in De Bron is organic. They also offer take-away lunch (orders must be placed before 11.30). Lunch We have been to the Bron several times over the last couple of years. On our last visit in March 2014, we had the soup of the day (2€), which happened to be vegan that day (carrot and chard). I went for the mini-size plat du jour (10,5€), my partner had the medium size dish (11€), which is already a fairly big portion. The plat du jour mostly consists of grains and a selection …
