Restaurant review #64 – De Graankorrel is a vegan/macrobiotic restaurant, in the city center of Ostend (29km from Bruges). It’s located behind the town hall, just a 10 minute walk from the city center. I already posted a review of De Graankorrel in Ostend in 2014, you can see that review here.
Everything at De Graankorrel is not only vegan, but also glutenfree. Prices have increased a little bit since our last visit, and you can no longer have the plat du jour in different sizes: just one standard size now, at 16,50€ for the main dish. And one size soup at 6,80€ or miso-soup at 8€.
There are now more fresh drinks to choose from, with freshly squeezed juices. And the couch at the entrance has made room for some extra tables and chairs (good thing, since it is mostly a full house!).
We ordered carrot, red beet and applejuice (6,50€) and carrot juice (5,80). One soup of the day (6,80€) and two main dishes (16,50€). We were quickly served our drinks.
The soup followed shortly and was coconut spinach soup. Very nice and a fairly large portion! If you only have a small appetite, this soup could very well suit you as a light lunch, because it was well stocked with vegetables.
Afterwards, it took quite a while for our main dish to be served. But it was quite a treat when it did arrive. Look at this! The dish contained buckwheat, almond paste, a pastry made from split peas, mash of parsley roots, baked tempeh, sauerkraut and broccoli topped with blue flowers. It was simply delicious.
To finish, we ordered one coffee, and a piece of pie for each. One pie was coffee/mokka flavoured, the other with red fruits and berries. The pies were great, although the taste of the fat (I think coconut oil) was a bit dominant.
We love going to lunch at De Graankorrel. It is a bit on the expensive side (62€ for the two of us), but everything is freshly prepared and portions are more than enough! Very relaxed and serene atmosphere, and everything is spotlessly clean. You do need some time for lunch though, as it can sometimes be a long wait to be served.
Note!! De Graankorrel is only open during weekdays for lunch (12-2PM) and it is advised to make a reservation.

All of this meal looked delicious guys! Wowzers, now that’s a main course! Isn’t great when you are served something that you just end up looking at for minutes because you can’t decide where to begin?! 😀 You should suggest to them that they should start using some odourless coconut oil- there’s no coconutty taste.
Lovely review of a great menu in a very nice place. Next time I’m in Ostend, I’ll make a reservation. Thanks.
I wanna go there like NOW!!! Good idea about the bathroom !
Hello, as usual your review is first class! Precise description of the meals and super photos. Thank you!
After Hashtagfood yesterday in Bruges today we ate at De Graankorrel because of your excellent recommendations (we are vegans from Germany and thankful to all tipps) and we were not dissappointed. The two plat du jour were fabulous and so was the dessert (also a coconut tartelet with berries).
A really fantastic website Trudi & Jim!
Thanks for your feedback. It’s nice to hear our blogging efforts are appreciated 🙂 And that people find the information useful!
Great that you discovered De Graankorrel in Ostend. It doesn’t get that much mention on forums as other places, but it is definitely a great place!
