#242 Vegan burgers at the beach, Jilles, Oostende

restaurant review #242  – Jilles Beer and Burgers is a Belgian chain with three restaurants: one in Bruges, Oostende and in Ghent. Since a couple of months, Jilles has a seperate vegan menu. Yeah! The menu lists four vegan burgers: all the same hazelnutburger, with different extras. We visited a couple of weeks ago, as we wanted to try the new vegan burger before going to a show in the neighbouring Kursaal. We sat on the terrace. And waited. And waited. And waited … It took about 25 minutes before a waiter came to simply give us a menu.

#219 Lunch at the beach promenade: Toi, moi et la mer, Ostend

restaurant review #219 – Toi, Moi et la Mer is a traditional restaurant on the beach promenade in Ostend. The restaurant serves mainly dishes with fish. I had already asked several months ago whether they would be prepared to serve a vegan menu, and was told that is possible, if one asks it two days in advance. So we did! This review is from a visit a couple of months ago, in the Fall of 2018. Toi, Moi et la Mer is located on the beach promenade of Ostend, not so far from the Casino Kursaal. When we arrived, we were the first for lunch. But afterwards more and more people came in for lunch. This is what we were served. as a small appetizer, a little dish with Swissh Chard and red beet then another small appetizer followed: a mousse from chervil, carrot and scorzonera the entree was falafel, scorzonera crips and beet carpacio as a main dish we were served a homemade lentil burger, with haricots salad mix and quinoa The falafel beet …

A visit to zero waste shop Refill, Oudenburg

shop review #57 – Refill is a new zero waste shop in Oudenburg (close to Ostend). I was here with a friend a couple of weeks ago. Refill has a large collection of dispensers with nuts, seeds, dried fruits, and other bulk products. Also products like agave and cleaning products to refill. So bring your own boxes and bottles to fill! Also some vegan products in the fridge (burgers). Refill also sells vegan cake and muffins, and vegan labelled candy. I bought some nuts and vegan candy. First you have to weigh your container at the counter, label it, then fill it up, so the weight of the container isn’t included in the price. Also bought chocolate cake and a berry muffin. Very nice. Refill is a bright and modern shop. Everything seemed newely renovated. Pity it is not accessible though (several large steps to get in). Friendly lady at the counter. Refill is definitely a great addition to Oudenburg! Refill, location Hoogstraat 12, 8460 Oudenburg 0496 86 06 14 website: https://www.refilloudenburg.be/ See the list of shops, on The …

#214 Vegan lunch at Yak Tibetan restaurant, Ostend

restaurant review #214 – Yak is a tibetan restaurant in Ostend, on the beach promenade, not far from the Casino Kursaal. In 2018, the name changed from Snow Tearoom to Yak Tibetan restaurant (I’m guessing new owners?). With no website and no facebookpage, it was hard to find any info about this place. We had already wanted to go previously, to arrive there and find out that it is closed on Tuesday (see Winter opening hours, sheet on front porch). We were on a Sunday last Winter, and besides a couple of casual visitors drinking a beer on the terrace, we were the only visitors for lunch. The menu has vegetarian and non-vegetarian sections. About half of the vegetarian dishes seem vegan (others are with butter sauce or with the use of dairy in curry). I was a bit anxious about having to ask and explain ‘vegan’ (no dairy no eggs), but the young lady serving us seemed to understand – in a mixture of Flemish and English. We had some springrolls and momos as an …

#211 Very nice vegan lunch at La Vie, Ostend

restaurant review #211 – La Vie is a restaurant and cocktail bar in the city center of Ostend. It is located in the old Fishermen’s quarter (Vissersplein), in a a renovated place. I had already mailed before to inquire about vegan options, and was said to be no problem. So a couple of months later, when making the reservation, I e-mailed again to make the reservation. This is from a visit a couple of weeks ago, in the Fall of 2018. Chef Joicy was very knowledgeable about ingredients, and made some suggestions of what we could order from the menu – in a veganised version. We went for the papadums (6,5€) and sushi as appetizers (8€) and the curry (18€) and faijita (16€) as main dishes. There was vegan icecream available, but we were too stuffed for dessert. The food was really nice. Freshly prepared, great taste, nice presentation. Service was swift and friendly. The interior also enjoyable (we were seated in the veranda area, which is bright and spacious – the area more inside …

#201 Vegan pizza in the city center of Ostend, Pizza & Pasta Poppy’s

restaurant review #201 – Pizza & Pasta Poppy’s is a restaurant in the city center of Ostend, just a two minute walk from the main shopping street and the central square Wapenplein. It is just around the corner of the Fishers’ square (Vissersplein). If I remember correctly, there used to be a shop here that sold party costumes, theater and carnaval attributes (was it called De Schaar?). Pizza & Pasta Poppy’s is a family run restaurant, which – the name gives it away 😉 serves mainly pizzas and pasta! This review is from a visit at the beginning of August, when I visited the restaurant alone. There were several vegetarian options indicated on menu, and some options can be made vegan (with leaving out the cheese). I asked which pizza she recommened as a vegan pizza, and was suggested the pizza Poppy’s, but without the dairy cheese. I took the medium version (14€) The pizza came loaded with fresh vegetables: Although this was a medium pizza, I could not finish it! It was topped with a …

Vegan cake at Thee met een Verhaal, Ostend

Shop review #53 – Ostend may be self-labelled the ‘Queen of the Coastal Cities’ in Belgium (‘De Koningin der badsteden’), but it certainly doesn’t hit top of the list when it comes down to finding places that serve vegan food! A couple of weeks ago, I did discover a cosy little tea house in the city center, that serves vegan cake: Thee met een Verhaal (Tea with a Story).  Yeah, what a pleasant surprise! Thee met een Verhaal serves tea (d’oh! 😉 ), and also has a similar tea house in Aarschot. They also have some cakes on offer (of which one at least is always vegan – cake or pie from Madam Bakster). That day it was with chocolate and peanuts. Served in a lovely antique cup with mathcing dish. Really enjoyed it! Service was very friendly too, and if you want to talk tea, this is definitely the place! Thee met een Verhaal is a cosy little place, near the Casino Kursaal. A great addition to Ostend! Thee met een Verhaal, location Van …

#194 Lovely lunch at new resto Organic Vision, Ostend

restaurant review #194 – Organic Vision is a new restaurant in the city center of Ostend. It is located near the main shopping street. Organic Vision is the long awaited successor of De Graankorrel, which was a vegan – macrobiotic restaurant in Ostend, but closed about 2 years ago. Unlike De Graankorel, Organic Vision is not a vegan restaurant. There are however several vegan dishes available (the plat du jour is also always vegan) and all desserts are vegan and sugarfree. And as the name suggests, it is an organic restaurant. Since it opened in the Spring of 2018, I have already visited Organic Vision a couple of times. The restaurant is in a nicely renovated place, with a sober yet fresh and elegant design. There are also seating places outside, just in front of the restaurant, where you can have a relaxed lunch, albeit very close to the touristy heart of Ostend. The vegan plat du jour is 19,60€. Another vegan dish is the chanco-nabe (20,30€). Or if you are not really that hungry, …

#151 Bagels and salads at Sanseveria Bagelsalon, Ostend

Restaurant review #151 – This is the second location of Sanseveria Bagelsalon. The orginal one is in Bruges, which I visited a year ago (see review). Meanwhile, Sanseveria bagelsalon has comfirmed that the bagels (bread buns) are vegan, and now also has some vegan options on the menu (one standardly vegan bagel, the other is vegetarian and can be veganised, and then there’s also a salad). They are clearly labelled on the menu. It is in the city center in the the Wittenonnenstraat (the “white nuns” street), next to book shop Corman. I was here for lunch a couple of weeks ago. I had an orange juice (rather small glass, but then it also was only 3€) and the bagel with avocado, grilled eggplant, tomato and salad (8€). Didn’t have to wait long, and it was nice! When I arrived the place was quite full (it’s not really big, I think there’s room for about 12-14 people). And I asked if I could join other people at their table, which was no problem. But it …

Shopping at organic shop Mordan, Ostend (2)

Shop review #33 – Mordan is an organic shop in Ostend (at the Belgian coast) and has two locations: the oldest shop is the city center (right next to the main shopping street Kappelestraat) and has been there for decades. The other one is at the edge of Ostend, on the Torhoutsesteenweg (review of this one is here: shop review #16). Mordan now also has a webshop, with free delivery throughout Belgium (for any order above 25€). The shop Mordan has been there as long as I can remember. As I grew up in Ostend (and didn’t live far from it!), I know the shop quite well. Mordan in Ostend is not a vegan shop, but sells many vegan products that you won’t find so easily in ‘regular’ shops. From vegan cheese to chia seeds from coconut oil to vegan chocolate, from vegan bread spreads to vegan desserts. Note: as is the case in many organic shops in Belgium, there is unfortunately also a ‘meat and cheese’ counter: One big difference with the other shop at the Torhoustesteenweg is there is no …
