#106 Nice dinner and service at Xu’s Cooking, Vienna

Restaurant Review #106. This is the last restaurant review from our visit to Vienna in Austria last Summer. Here’s an overview of all the restaurants we visited in Vienna. Xu’s Cooking is a vegetarian Taiwanese restaurant on the edge of city center of Vienna. It is a spacious place, with a terrace outside. The interior did ooze a bit of a somber and outdated atmosphere though. Xu’s Cooking has a buffet at lunch time, but we were here for dinner. There is a very extensive menu list. Most dishes are vegan (non-vegan dishes are labelled with a *). There are a lot of dishes with mock meats and ‘fish’. Not being used to so much variety on a menu list any more, it was hard to choose! This is what we had: We were too stuffed for desserts, but were served some banana balls and hot drinks anyway! A very enjoyable dining out experience. #97 – Taiwanese dinner at veggie resto Vegetasia, Vienna. A bit of a bummer

Restaurant review #97 – Vegetasia is a vegetarian restaurant in Vienna. We visited Vegetasia earlier this year, during a short stay in Austria’s capital (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). Vegetasia has a very extensive menu, with lots of ‘mock meat’ dishes (duck, chicken, ..). It was hard to choose. We have seen this restaurant being called a vegan restaurant on several fora, but there are still desserts with cow’s milk on the menu. This is what we ordered: corn creme soup with ‘crab’ pieces (4,50€), fried seaweed (5€). Main dishes Te pan yaki with soy (13€) and mock duck with mushrooms (13,50€), both served with white rice. Sparkling water (33cL) was 3,90€ and a glass of lemon soda 3,50€. The soup was very disappointing. It was quite tasteless, and had only some miniscule ‘crab’ pieces. The algae were not really fried. #94 Nice lunch at I love Veggie Burger, Vienna

Restaurant review #94 – I love Veggieburger is vegan burgerplace in the city center of Vienna. It is a 2 minutes walk from the Swedenplatz (where the boat excursions start) and a 5 to 10 minute walk from the Stephanschurch. We went to I Love Veggie Burger for lunch during our city trip to Vienna this Summer (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). It was a very hot day and we sat on the front terrace (inside the restaurant was very hot!). There is some traffic in the street passing the terrace, but despite being close to the historical center, it is a quiet area. The menu is quite extensive, and we are not used to having so much choice! 😉 You can also ‘pimp’ your own burger (choose the bread, a patty, extra vegetables or leave some out, …). Restaurant review #91 – Hollerei is a vegetarian restaurant outside of the city center of Vienna (Austria). It’s a 10 minute walk from the famous Schönbrunn palace. It was a hot Summer day and we sat on the shady front terrace of Hollerei. (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna) Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu (and also the allergenes lettres as we saw everywhere in shops, bakeries and restaurants in Vienna, very handy!). I wasn’t very hungry and just ordered an appetizer for lunch: a quinoa dish with some vegetables (6,90€). More than enough for me. For drinks I had a ‘vitamine cocktail’, a nice fresh juice (4,90€). Jim had soup (Melone gazpachio, 6,90€, two breads were 0,90€) and as a main dish the seitan roulade (14,90€). Food was nice. The quinoa dish was a bit blend, even only being an appetizer. We shared a Chocolate mousse for dessert (6,90€). Restaurant review #88 – Bio bar von Antun is a vegetarian restaurant in the city center of Vienna (Austria). We were there for lunch this Summer (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). It was a beautiful sunny – but very hot – day, and we were pleased to see there is a large terrace in front of the restaurant (we managed to get a spot in the shade). The restaurant is located in a no-traffic zone, and despite being really close to the historic hotspots of Vienna, it was pleasantly quiet, with only a few passers by. – Update see below –  It is a vegetarian restaurant, but vegan options are clearly labelled on the menu card. I didn’t have a large appetite, so only took a starter: Bruschetta mit Paradeis-Sauce, Räucher-Tofu, Knoblauch und italienischen Kräutern, garniert (8,90€). #87 – Vegan fine dining at Tian (Vienna), a gastronomic feast! *****

Restaurant review #87 – Tian is a gastronomical vegetarian restaurant in the city center of Vienna (one Michelin star). It is located in between the Stadtpark and the Stephansplatz, near the Ring around the inner city. We made a reservation through the website of Tian for a Saturday evening. A good thing we made the reservation, beacuse several patrons were turned away on the evening itself! (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). It was a very nice Summer evening and we were suggested a seat on the terrace in front of the restaurant. Although located in a quiet street, there is a theater across the street, which made it a bit busy at times. At one point there was a coach standing stationary with the motor running in front of the theater (bringing people to the evening performance), which was somewhat unpleasant, but otherwise we had a lovely evening. #85 – Vegan burgers at Swing Kitchen, Vienna ***

Restaurant review #85 – Swing Kitchen is a vegan fast food place in Vienna. There are actually two Swing Kitchens in Vienna: one not so far from the famous Vienna State Opera and the other near the Westbahnhof. We visited the one near the Opera house, in the Operngasse (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). It was a very hot couple of days in Vienna, and inside Swing Kitchen was just as hot! The menu is written on the large board above the counter. The menu consists mainly of burgers and some other fast food items (wraps, nuggets, but also salads). There are also some nice looking desserts in the counter. We ordered our food and drink at the counter, paid, and were given a number. Communication at the counter was very brief and not quite jovial, but maybe that had to do with the fact that we spoke in English. A short while later, our number was called out (and shown on a TV-screen), and we could pick up our food at the counter. Restaurant review #83 – In the beginning of Summer, we spent a couple of days in Vienna, Austria. Landia was one of the many restaurants we visited (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). I read it is renowned for making traditional Austrian dishes like Wiener schnitzel and cordon blue, but of course vegan style. So we definitely wanted to check this out! Landia is a vegetarian restaurant. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu. It is just outside the historical city center (Innere Stadt), about a ten minute walk from the Maria Theresian Platz. We were there at noon on a weekday, around 2PM and the lunch rushhour was already over, so no trouble getting a seat. We ordered a vegan schnitzel (9,80€) and vegan cordon blue (11,40€). Asked for extra potatoes, but these never came (they weren’t billed neither, so the waitress must have just forgotten). For drinks we had a freshly pressed orange juice (2,9) and a soda zitrone (sparkling water with a slice of lemon, 1,5€). A look inside vegan shop Veganz in Vienna, Austria

Shop review #25 – A couple of weeks ago, we went to Vienna for a couple of days (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). Upon arriving in Austria’s capital, the first thing we did was head to vegan shop Veganz. I had not packed any toiletries for our citytrip (toothpaste, deo, body lotion, …) so needed some supplies to get us through the holiday. And I was also hoping to discover some new brands! (UPDATE 2017 – see below) Veganz is about a 10 minute walk from the Opera (walk down south on the Operngasse and you walk stray up to it). We were also quite hungry (it was already afternoon and we hadn’t had any lunch), so we bought a drink, a wrap and sushi from the Vreshtogo fridge and ate them on the bench just outside of Veganz. Lovely! Veganz is sometimes referred to as a ‘supermarket’, which led me to expect a bigger store. It’s not as big as the supermarkets like Delhaize, Carrefour or even Bioplanet (BE) and Ekoplaza (NL). But Veganz is a reasonably sized store, comparable …
