Restaurant review #87 – Tian is a gastronomical vegetarian restaurant in the city center of Vienna (one Michelin star). It is located in between the Stadtpark and the Stephansplatz, near the Ring around the inner city. We made a reservation through the website of Tian for a Saturday evening. A good thing we made the reservation, beacuse several patrons were turned away on the evening itself!
(see other reviews from our trip to Vienna).
It was a very nice Summer evening and we were suggested a seat on the terrace in front of the restaurant. Although located in a quiet street, there is a theater across the street, which made it a bit busy at times. At one point there was a coach standing stationary with the motor running in front of the theater (bringing people to the evening performance), which was somewhat unpleasant, but otherwise we had a lovely evening.
It was perfect Summer weather for outside dining!
The waiter suggested a glass of champagne and we went for it! (it was very, VERY expensive: 16 euro for one small glass). We were a bit taken by surprise that the waiter could not tell at first hand whether the champagne was vegan or not (he jokingly assumed it was), but later came back to confirm that it was. During dinner we shared a bottle of water (0,75L, 8€).
The waiter gave us some information on our options for the menu and we ordered a six 6-course vegan menu (108€).

menu at Tian – as not all entries are vegan, the waiter made some suggestions to make up our 6 course vegan menu. We just went along with his suggestions.
Our first appetizer followed shortly. As is customary, the waiters enumerated every ingredient when serving the dishes. Information overload! We really didn’t fancy making notes during our dinner evening out, and so I cannot recall the names of all the lovely dishes we had.
The photos will have to speak for themselves this time 😉

No, of course these are not eggs, they are dessert! It’s called sunny side up – with mango buckwheat and Indian pale ale. Sublime!) @Tian, Vienna
It was not only a feast for our taste buds, but also for the eye. Every dish was presented with eye for detail and beautifully arranged. The surreal looking “eggs” (called ‘sunny side up’) topped an exciting gastronomic evening.
Service was very friendly. As we were seated outside, we did not get a feel of the decor inside, so would love to go back again one day to visit again. We just got a glimpse of the interior when visiting the toilets (downstairs), which has a water bassin with special light effects. Beautiful!
In sum: we had a wonderful evening. Although expensive, we thought it was well worth it (except for that glass of champagne ;-).

The Sunny Side Up sort of blew my mind when I first saw it. I had to do a double take.
Everything looked fabulous. Except the champagne. 😉
