#139 Hustle and bustle in Soho. Dinner at Mildreds, London

Restaurant review #139 – Mildreds is a vegetarian restaurant in London, and has four locations: Soho, Camden, Kings Cross and Dalston. We went to the one in Soho during our short trip to London this Summer. It is in the south side of Soho, near the very busy Piccadilly Circus. We could not make a reservation, as the restaurant has a no booking policy (which we do find quite annoying, and has left us avoiding certain places in the past). But we had no other dinner plans for that first evening in London, and the restaurant was not too far from out hotel, so we headed there early hoping to get a spot. We arrived a bit before 6PM, and luckily, there was still space. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu and the wine list also clearly indicates the vegan wines (I think they were all vegan). We were served free water, which was nice! Glass of wine was £5,5. This what we had for dinner: Gyoza dumplings, £6 Hummus, £6 Wood roasted …

#116 Vegan lunch at the beach: Histoires d’O, Ostend

Restaurant review #116 – Histoires d’O is a bistro on the beach promenade in Ostend. I had inquired beforehand via e-mail and received a reply that they have several vegan dishes, like a pasta pesto and a dish with quinoa. We were in Ostend a couple of weeks ago on a Saturday, and had no set lunch plans, so this was more sprung of the moment. I did phone beforehand to make a reservation (which turned out not to be really necessary, still plenty of space available) and asked again about vegan options. The lady on the phone seemed to be a bit confused about what vegan means, but we decided to go anyway and hoped it would become clear when ordering. Histoires d’O is a nice place, with a vintage feel. The dark wooden furniture reminds me of old fishermen pubs from decades ago. The chairs are also very vintage, and as is often the case with retro style, not so comfortable 😉 Service was very friendly, and the waitress had no problem checking …

Vegan ‘koffiekoeken’ and pie from Bakkerij Filip, Kuurne

Shop review #30 – Bakkerij Filip is a local bakery in Kuurne, which is a small town just next to Kortrijk (Courtrai) in the south of Flanders. I had already seen several posts on facebook and Instagram of their vegan pastry and cakes. Yeah! Vegan pastry is still a rarity in Belgian bakeries, and I have only been able to buy it on one ocasion before, at Bakkerij Frimout in Ghent (see blog here). So when we planned a trip to Kortrijk a couple of weeks ago, I definitely wanted to check out Bakkerij Filip! There is a selection of vegan items for sale at the bakery, among which some specialties that are not so easily found in regular shops in Belgium. Like this omelet mix (still need to try it). I also bought some cookies and other goodies (some very nice lemon cookies and veganaise). The wife of bakery Filip, Liraz – vegan herself, gave us a tour of the bakery downstairs, which still runs with some real antique machines (and more modern ones too of …

Vegan specialties at shop Moor & Moor, Ghent

Shop review #28 – Moor & Moor is a little shop in Ghent, with many vegan food specialties. I had seen a facebook post with a photo of vegan caviar for sale at Moor & Moor, so during one of my lasts visits to Ghent, I wanted to go check out this shop. I already blogged about the vegan caviar (see my post here). Moor & Moor is in the city center, close to the main shopping street (Veldstraat) and close to Dille & Kamille. Moor & Moor has a small counter inside and a terrace in front, where you can have your coffee and a piece of raw vegan pie, or even some icecream! Pies are from raw food chef Julie. Although there are many vegan products availabe at Moor & Moor (and some brands that are not readily found in other Belgian shops), it is not an all vegan shop. So do not be surprised to find grilled crickets or ansjovis next to the kale chips. I suspect that the store concept is not so much …

#90 – Nice lunch at Vegaverso, Louvain (3)

Restaurant review #90 – Vegaverso is a vegan lunch bar in the city center of Louvain. Vegaverso serves mainly sandwiches, burgers and also some hot dishes like stews or pasta (the menu varies). We’ve been here a couple of times before, and impressions from some of those visits can be seen here (#27) and here (#34). Vegaverso is a lovely charming place, soberly but stylishly decorated, with a relaxed atmosphere. Service by Tilly and her mom is always super friendly. It’s semi-self service: you order at the bar, take your drinks with you, and when your food is ready they bring the order to your table. Our you can also buy to take away. The menu is pretty extensive, with several burgers, wraps, hotdogs to choose from. Also many different vegan sauces, and different types of bread. The combinations are endless! Also a great variety of vegan pastry and cookies. And the menu changes every once in a while too, so there’s always something new to try. We visited Vegaverso again in July for lunch. This is what we had: A lovely lunch and more than …

#71 – Vegan cakes and pie at Vero Caffè, Bruges ***

Restaurant review #71 – Vero Caffè is a coffee and tea bar in the city center of Bruges, not far from the central Market Square and the Burg. So far, it’s one of the few places in Bruges where you can order a soy lattè or a vegan hot chocolate. Since a couple of weeks, Vero Caffè also serves vegan cakes and pies on Thursday, made by Marieke from Chez Mariette. Hurray! It was hard to choose from all those delicious looking cakes and pies. I went for the apple pie with a lemon tea. Very nice! The place is bright, spacious, and cosy, and there is also a terrace in front. Chairs are a bit uncomfortable, some cushions on the chairs would be nice and would make it a bit more relaxed (there are some couches in the front though). Service was friendly and quick. Toilet in the back was clean. We sure hope those vegan pies and cakes will become available every day! Apple and raisin pie with walnut crumble

We have plenty of apples from our apple trees in the garden. I juice them, I make apple sauce, and they are of course also great for baking. And as I also have plenty of walnuts from our own tree, so this apple pie with walnut crumble is a great combo to use both of these! Attention: making this pie requires advance preparation! you need to soak the cashews for at least 6-8 hours before you can make the pie! You also need a large (especially deep) pie pan (23cm or 9 inch) – considering that about 6 to 8 apples go in it! Ingredients 1 puff pastry* For the topping 1/2 cup flour 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tbs chopped walnuts 1/2 ts cinnamon 1/4 ts salt 6 tbs cold vegan butter For the filling 1/2 cup cashews, soaked in water for 6-8 hours (til they are very soft) 3 tbs lemon juice (this is from about 1 + 1/2 lemon) 1/4 cup plain soy yoghurt 3 tbs flour 3/4 cup sugar 1/2 ts vanille extract 3/4 ts cinnamon 1/2 ginger 1/2 …

Lemon mousse pie

I have made this pie only once so far, but I already know it will be one I will be making lots of times again 🙂 Made this when we had friends over for dinner, and everyone loved it! Beware: making this pie requires advance preparation (soaking the cashews and cooling the pie and the topping in the fridge so it can stiffen). You need a large springform pan (23 cm / 9 inch). Ingredients vegan lemon mousse pie For the crust 1 + 1/4 cup finely grated vegan crackers (230 g or about 7 packs of double crackers, I usually use kamut crackers). 3 tbs sugar 4 tbs melted cocount oil 1 tbs soy milk For the pie 1/2 cup cashews, soaked until very soft (I ususally leave these to soak overnight) 400 ml coconut milk 1/2 cup almond or soy milk 1/2 ts agar agar powder 2/3 cup sugar 3 tbs coconut oil 1/2 cup fresh lemon juice 2 tbs lemon zest 2 ts vanilla extract For the topping 3/4 cup water 1 tbs …
