#184 Sandwich for lunch from Brazi’s, Bruges

restaurant review #184 – Brazi’s is a sandwich lunch cafe. It mainly offers take-away (there are a handful seating places too). As the name suggest, Brazi’s is a sandwich shop with a ‘touch of Brasil’ (website). It is located very close to the Central Market place, in the same street as vegan shop Leeloo and restaurant De Republiek. I was looking for a quick lunch to take home with me and went in to ask whether they have any vegan options. The lady at the counter was very friendly. I was offered a sandwich with hummus, guacamole, eggplant, tomato and raw vegetables. The bread was said to be vegan. So I bought that sandwich to take away (5€). The sandwich was nice! #183 Light lunch at That’s Toast, Bruges

restaurant review #183 – That’s Toast is a brasserie in the center of Bruges. It is the Dweersstraat, which is near ‘t Zand (connecting the two shopping streets: the Zuidzandstraat and the Noordzandstraat). It is in the same location as where Grün used to be (which unfortunately closed). That’s Toast has a no reservations policy, which I find very unfortunate. I often avoid going to restaurants with a no-reservation policy, as I have mobility issues (sometimes use a wheelchair). When dining out, I will always try to make a reservation, as I want to be sure I will have a place to sit upon arrival. If one is met with a long queue and not sure how long it will last, it is for me also not always possible to decide last minute to go somewhere else (especially when vegan options in town are not so abundant). So this time I was taking the chance, since I was meeting a friend here for lunch. Upon arrival there was a small queue to get in. We waited …

T-shirts, sweaters and more at eco-vegan shop Leeloo, Bruges

Shop review #52 – Leeloo is a clothes and accessories shop in the city center of Bruges. It is located in the Sint Jakobsstraat, which is very close to the central market. It exists since about 20 years, and has always focused on selling sustainable, eco-friendly clothing! In April 2018, Leeloo announced on their facebook page that from then on, all products at the store are animal free! Yeah! So shortly afterwards, I went to pay them a visit. The shop is well packed, with a great selection of T-shirts, pants, sweaters, … There are also some body and care products and some bags. The shop has a nice modern ‘urban’ look, and several mirrors give it a more spacious impression. There’s also a wall with a nice collection of stickers. I looked around for a while, and then boughts some T-shirts. The only thing that withheld me from shopping a bit longer, was the very loud techno music (I can only describe it as a mixture between house and Kraftwerk 😀 ) which was driving …

#180 Nice lunch at De Republiek (2), Bruges

restaurant review #180 – De Republiek is a brasserie in the city center of Bruges, close to the market square (north west of market). De Republiek is also a cultural hub with rooms for art exhibitions, socio-cultural events and a movie theater. We were here previously in the fall of 2016 (see review here). De Republiek has had a complete makeover in the Fall of 2017. The place is much brighter and modern now. When we visited for lunch a couple of weeks ago, they were still working on the inner court terrace, but it looked like it would be quite a nice and large terrace! We were at De republiek for an early lunch. I had made a reservation through the website, but that seemed not to have been necessary (still plenty of space). I think it is more crowded in the evening, and is advised to make a reservation for dinner though. There is one vegan dish standardly available on the menu: the Saint Tropez dish, which is an ovendish with vegetables (sweet potato, broccoli, …

#172 Light lunch at Bohio, Bruges

restaurant review #172 Bohio is a lunch bar in the city center of Bruges. It is in the Noordzandstraat, which, as you can already tell from the name, is a street leading to ‘t Zand. Bohio was originally in de Ezelstraat, but moved to this location a couple of weeks ago. When I was looking for Bohio, I found number 85 in the Noordzandstraat , and I found a shop with … clothes. Then I noticed the sign at the pavement pointing to the lunch bar, at the back of the clothes shop. So it is a bit tucked ayway from sight. It was a surprise to see it right next to a hair salon, also in the same space. UPDATE – see below There are several vegan options standardly available at Bohio, bowls, sandwiches, and salads. The bread of the sandwiches was said to be vegan. There is also vegan cake available, made by Chez Mariette. The plat du jour can always be veganised. And there are also fresh juices. This is what I had …

A look inside Bed & Breakfast AM/PM in Bruges

Bruges is visited by millions of tourists each year. Some only spend one day in Bruges, others come for a short city trip and stay overnight, possibly combined with excursions to other touristic hotspots in Flanders, like Flanders Fields or the coastal area. As I live near Bruges myself, I hardly know any places to stay overnight (or at least, not well enough to recommendend any). To my surprise, I saw a vegetarian bed and breakfast listed on Happy Cow last year, called AM/PM.  And through some mutual friends, I also heard that the hosts of the B&B, Tiny and Kevin, are more and more exploring veganism, and that they also serve vegan breakfast! (NOTE: see update below) As such, I asked them if I could pay them a visit, to take a look inside! And so a couple of weeks ago, I had a nice chat with host Tiny, about the renovation of the house, their journey to veganism and their experiences with running a bed & breakfast in Bruges! Bed & breakfast AM/PM is …

#166 Very nice lunch at Hashtag Food, Bruges (4)

restaurant review #166 –  Hashtag Food is a restaurant at the edge of Bruges. It is not a vegan restaurant, but they have several vegan options standardly available.  Hashtag Food used to be in the city center, but in the Fall of 2017, the restaurant moved to a quieter area at the edge of the city, near the Scheepsdalebrug. We have visited Hashtag Food on several occasions throughout the years. Previous reviews of Hashtag Food are here. But this was our first visit to the new location at the Scheepsdalebrug. This review is from a visit at the beginning of this year. The new location is a nicely renovated place, with earth and wood like colours dominating the atmosphere. The old vinyl records as placemats have remained. I love the idea, but as a music lover, also have some heartache using vinyl this way! The menu options have changed somewhat. The only vegan appetizer is a tapas selection. Options to make combinations (eg potatoe wedges on the side) are gone, as it became too difficult to …

#163 Nice lunch at Li O Lait, Bruges

restaurant review #163 – Li O Lait is a lunch/coffee bar in the city center of Bruges, close to ‘t Zand. I had lunch here a couple of weeks ago with a friend. I had inquired back in 2016 whether they had any vegan options, and received a positive reply. Li O Lait had also posted an announcement about vegan bagels in May 2017 on their facebookpage and I had seen several posts about vegan cake being served. Before going, I telephoned again to be sure they serve something vegan, as there is no mention about anything vegan on their website. And they do! Reservation was said not to be necessary for lunch, if we came early. And so we did. There are no vegan options mentioned on the menu, but there’s a line that says that vegans can ask what’s on offer. So we did, and this is what we had for lunch: the soup of the day, and the bagel with tomato, salad and guacamole (bagel bread is said to be vegan). For dessert, we had …

#162 Nice lunch at Indian restaurant Shalimar, Bruges

restaurant review #162. Shalimar is an Indian restaurant at the edge of the city. It is located just outside the Gentpoort, in Assebroek. It was already 5 years ago that we had been to Shalimar. Since then, the restaurant has changed owners. After our lunch, we paid a visit to the new shop of Origin’O just across the street. A very nice shop, see our impressions here. There are several vegetarian dishes mentionned seperately on the menu (section ‘vegetarian’) of which most seem to be vegan. We inquired when ordering, and the waiter was very knowledgeable about the ingredients of the dishes. The naan was said to be with yoghurt, so we just had plain rice with the main dishes. We were served a small appetizer with the drinks. As the waiter was putting it on the table we saw a white drizzled line on the snacks, and at the same time he realised it too and said it was with yoghurt and would bring something else. Which followed shortly. It was a very nice appetizer, …

#160 Vegan dinner at Beerresto De Brugsche Tafel, Bruges

restaurant review #160  – De Brugsche Tafel is a ‘beer restaurant’ in the city center of Bruges (just 5 minutes from the central Market and the Belfry). De Brugsche Tafel literally means ‘the table of Bruges’. The restaurant has a nice selection of beers. Since a a couple of months, De Brugsche Tafel has vegan dishes standardly available on the menu. Nice! So we made a reservation (inquired again whether we could get something vegan when we telephoned, which was said to be no problem) and went here for dinner. Our visit is from the beginning of December 2017. De Brugsche Tafel is rather small restaurant, and is a family run bussiness. There are some vegan appetizers available, or ones that can be veganised, like bruschetta (8,90€) We had the soup of the day which was vegan and was chervel soup (4,95€). There is one vegan weeksuggestion (that week it was risotto, but it was sold out, since it was on a Tuesday evening and they close on Wednesdays). Another vegan dish was couscous with vegetables …
