#142 Light lunch at vegan resto Redemption, London

restaurant review #142 – Redemption is a vegan restaurant in London, on the upper east side of Hyde Park. We had visited the Museum of Brands and Packaging that morning, which is not so well known, but very worthwhile (see pic below)! Everyday products and packages from 19th century life till present day. Really fascinating! After a stroll down Portobello Road in Notting Hill where the famous (and very touristic) Portobello market is (too crowded, too much noise) we headed towards Redemption. Redemption is a bright space with large windows and lots of light coming in. Nicely renovated (modern, but still classic and sober). Tables are not so closely placed together, so one can enjoy lunch or dinner in a relaxed atmosphere. There’s also a terrace in front, but the restaurant is located at a busy bus stop, so it did not seem very enjoyable to have our lunch outside with busses driving on and off. Redemption also offers take away. Everything is not only vegan, but also wheat free, sugar free and the restaurant …

#139 Hustle and bustle in Soho. Dinner at Mildreds, London

Restaurant review #139 – Mildreds is a vegetarian restaurant in London, and has four locations: Soho, Camden, Kings Cross and Dalston. We went to the one in Soho during our short trip to London this Summer. It is in the south side of Soho, near the very busy Piccadilly Circus. We could not make a reservation, as the restaurant has a no booking policy (which we do find quite annoying, and has left us avoiding certain places in the past). But we had no other dinner plans for that first evening in London, and the restaurant was not too far from out hotel, so we headed there early hoping to get a spot. We arrived a bit before 6PM, and luckily, there was still space. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu and the wine list also clearly indicates the vegan wines (I think they were all vegan). We were served free water, which was nice! Glass of wine was £5,5. This what we had for dinner: Gyoza dumplings, £6 Hummus, £6 Wood roasted …

#136 Gastronomic dining at The Gate, London

restaurant review #136 – The Gate is vegetarian restaurant in London. It has three locations: one in Islington, one in Hammersmith, and one in Marylebone, which is the one we went to. View this post on Instagram Very nice dinner at The Gate! #london Vegetarian restaurant with vegan options. It has a large terrace in front, and two restaurants rooms (one on ground floor, and one in basement). It is a more fancy, ‘restaurant like’ place, with gastronomic creations. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu. The winelist also mentions which drinks are vegan. This is what we had for dinner: Artichoke terrine, £8, truffle & hazelnut infused artichoke, homemade sundried tomato & basil salsa, crispy bread  Tofu Tikka, …

Take a look around! Adding travel snapshots to reviews

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to add snapshots of the surroundings to blogposts. So whenever I publish a post with a review of a shop or restaurant, there are now not only photos of the restaurant, but also one or two photos, or even a short video, of the area. A city view, a particular monument, or a spectacular landscape. It gives you an idea of the surroundings (albeit just a glimp), and some of the things we have spotted during our visit to that city or area. And for me it’s also a way of documenting some memories from that particular city trip or visit! Here are some of the pics that were included in recent reviews. Some link to Instagram. Lovely vegan Icecream and waffles at Yorica! London

shop review#38 – Yorica is a vegan icecream shop in London. There are two locations, one in Notting Hill, and one in Soho. Upon our arrival in London this Summer for a short city trip, the one in Soho was our first stop, as it was just around the corner from where we stayed! All the products sold at Yorica are not only vegan, but also free from nuts and gluten. You can buy icecream, waffles and pancakes to take away, or to eat at Yorica’s itself, although there is not that much space inside (some bar stools inside and a bench in front of the shop). One orders at the counter and the order is immediately delivered. After the order is handed to you, you can add some sprinkles on top if you wish. We were a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities on the menu (not being used to having that many options 😉 : several flavours of icecream, frozen ‘yoghurt’, waffles, and pancakes. There was some queuing up to the counter, but …

#105 All you can eat vegan food at Tai buffet, London (UK)

Restaurant review #105 – Tai Buffet is a vegan restaurant in center of London, near Shepherd’s Bush. We went here in the weekend that we were in London for Vegfest London (see review here), in October 2016. I telephoned the restaurant to make a reservation, and the girl at the phone said there is always a place available, but she did reserve a table for us. That appeared not to be necessary, there was still plenty of room (about 7PM on a Sunday evening). Tai buffet offers an all you can eat buffet. I did notice a sign that you can only be there for maximum two hours. I could easily see why they had to put that up there (there was a guy next to us who had already gone to take a full plate four times and was still continuing to eat when we left!). A bit uncertain whether it was all vegetarian or vegan (on the window it read ‘vegetarian restaurant’). The guy behind the counter assured me that it was all vegan: no eggs, no dairy! Allright! …

#101 Waiting for the Eurostar. Nice fastfood lunch at Greenway, train station Brussels

Restaurant review #101 – Reminder – GIVEAWAY to celebrate 100 restaurant reviews & 3 years The Bruges Vegan. Greenway is a Belgian vegetarian brand (restaurants and products) and was founded by Paul Florizoone in the mid nineties. The first Greenway restaurant opened in Ghent in 1996 and I vividly remember it opening at that time (I worked nearby and was thrilled!). Meanwhile there are three Greenway restaurants in Belgium (Ghent, Louvain and Antwerp) and a take-away/foodstall at the railway station of Bruxelles-Midi. I already blogged about the Greenway in Louvain and the Greenway in Antwerp. We stopped for lunch at the Greenway in the train station of Brussels on our way to Vegfest London (see our blog, with also a review of lectures from the intersectionality Conference HERE). We had some spare time before boarding the Eurostar to London, and were a bit anxious whether we would get any (decent) vegan food on the train ride to London, so decided to have something to eat at Greenway beforehand. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu. You order at the counter, …

#100 Vegan fine dining at Vanilla Black, London (UK)

Restaurant review #100 – Reminder – GIVEAWAY to celebrate 100 restaurant reviews & 3 years The Bruges Vegan. Vanilla Black is a vegetarian restaurant in city center of London, near the Royal Courts of Justice. It is located in a small quiet alley. It is one of the more expensive vegetarian restaurants in London, and offers fine gastronomical dining. We telephoned to make a reservation for the same evening and that was no problem, although we had to be early (6PM all later hours were fully booked). We received a vegan menu card and also a vegan wine list. Nice! We ordered the 3 course vegan menu and could each choose different meals, even nicer! The 3 course dinner was £41,50. We started with a glass of champagne (drapier, £9,75). Water was £3,95, glass of wine was £9,75 (quite expensive drinks!). Here’s what we had for dinner. It was too much too take notes of all the ingredients, but every dish was very nice. Service was also very swift and friendly. Toilets downstairs were clean, although a bit unorderly. …

Inspired by the Intersectionality Conference at VegFest, London

A couple of weeks ago, at the end of October 2016, we went to VegFest in London. This was a two day event at the Olympia Conference center, on Hammersmith Road (east London). It is not a free festival: we bought tickets in advance which were only £9 per person (buy one, get one half price). Tickets at the door were £15. We were especially interested in the Intersectionality Conference on Sunday. Arriving at the opening time of 11AM on Saturday, it became immediately clear that this is huge event! We found a long queue going round the block to get to the entrance at the west side of Olympia. We made good progress though, and after about only 10 minutes of queuing, scanning of our tickets and a security check, we could enter the venue. There were two large halls on the first floor, with dozens of stalls. The lectures were in the auditorium and conference rooms on the second floor, where there were also stalls from several NGO’s. The Olympia is a really well known venue, where …

#96 Lovely dinner at raw vegan restaurant Nama Foods, London (UK)

Restaurant review #96 – Nama Foods is a raw vegan restaurant in the city of center of London. It is located in one of the quieter streets of Notting Hill. After after having spent all day at Vegfest London on Saturday, we phoned to make a reservation and shortly afterwards headed to the restaurant. We were seated upstairs which is the ground level (there’s also a downstairs in the basement) We didn’t order an appetizer because we had already tasted several lovely vegan foods at VegFest. Update  – see below For drinks we had a glass of (vegan of course) prosecco (£7) and a freshly pressed juice ‘Internal radiance’ (carrot, orange, peer, lemon, turmeric, sea buckthorn oil) (£6). We ordered the vegan sushi (£14) and a specialty of the day being a terrine (14,50). The desserts looked very appetising so we could not resist. We had the pie of the day and the hazelnut moccha torte (each £7,50) and a capuciono (£3,2). All the food was presented very nicely and tasted very good! The staff was very friendly and welcoming …
