restaurant review #261 – Paula Mostaert is a casual lunch/dinner bar in the city center of Bruges. It is located in the Geldmuntstraat, one of the two main shoppings street, not far from the main square in the city center.
I was here a couple of weeks ago, in the Fall of 2019, for a quick lunch.
There’s one vegan hotdog standardly on the menu, and two others were said to be veganisable (replace meat dog with vegan hotdog and leave out the cheese).
The vegan options come with a French style hard bread, instead of the regular sandwich.
Note: the potate wedges are not vegan (baked in animal fat).
I had the ‘Rock the Casbah’, with humus, tomato, rucola and cashews (9,5€).
A rather large ‘hotdog’, with the bread and hotdog inside too big for me to be able to eat it with my hands and take a bite. So I asked for fork and knife. But as it is placed inside a basket, it’s a bit unhandy to eat even with cutlery.
The vegan hotdog is a seitan ‘sausage’, which wasn’t really my taste. It is shaped like a sausage, but actually it seemed more like a long piece of (minced like) seitan to me. I felt there was also too much bread in proportion.
Service was very friendly, and the setting is quite nice too. It’s a cosy old fashionned kind of place, with an upstairs area, and a small terrace upstairs in the back as well.
Note: the restaurant is not accessible. There are steps to get in and the upstairs area is through very narrow and steep stairs. No accessible toilet.

Toilets at Paula Mostaert, Bruges. Lots of chalk deposit on walls and sink. Why do I include a pic of the toilet? Read about it HERE
All in all: Appreciate that Paula Mostaert has a vegan option, but personally didn’t really fancy the seitan dog.
