A look inside shop Holland & Barrett, Bruges

Shop review #51 – Holland & Barrett is an international Chain (UK based) with also several shops in Belgium and the Netherlands. Holland & Barrett sells “a wide range of vitamins, minerals, health supplements, specialist foods and natural beauty products.” (taken from their website). There is also a Holland & Barrett shop in Bruges, in the Noordzandstraat (not far from ‘t Zand and the Dweersstraat).  I only recently discovered that H&B have a decent range of vegan labelled body and care products (e.g. shampoo, bath and shower wash, toothpaste, face cream), and now regularly do some shopping there. They also have some food items (nuts, special flours), and a wide range of vitamines and other supplements (vegan vitamine D for example). Here are some more pics from inside the Holland & Barrett in Bruges. Stylish handbags, shoes and more at vegan shop Amapola, Barcelona

shop review #50 – Amapola is a vegan shop in the city center of Barcelona, on the north side in the Vila de Gracia district. It sells T-shirts, handbags, wallets and shoes.  And some other accessories like jewelry and bonnets. (More reviews of Barcelona HERE). We were here a couple of weeks ago, and it was the first stop in our visit to Barcelona. The shop is quite spacious and has a nice selection of items, from different brands. We bought some shoes, and a wallet from Matt & Natt! Good to know: the shop is fully accessible, with a wheelchair ramp leading down into the shop Amapola, location Travessera de Gràcia, 129, 08012 Barcelona +34 930 10 62 73 website: https://amapolaveganshop.com/ See our list of shops, which may interest vegans. Eat your heart out! A look inside vegan supermarket Ecocentre in Barcelona

Shop review #48 – Ecocentre is a vegan shop in the city center of Barcelona. We went to Ecocentre after visiting the nearby Sagrada Familia and having lunch at vegan restaurant La Trocadero. (More reviews of Barcelona HERE). View this post on Instagram Hotdog! It's been a long time 😎 Lunch at vegan resto La trocadero. Near Sagrada Familia. 🌭🌭🌭🌭 #barcelona #sagradafamilia #gaudi #animalrights #veganbarcelona #barcelona #latrocadero #urbanveganfood #veganfastfood #notdog A post shared by trudi_brugesvegan (@trudi_brugesvegan) on Feb 1, 2018 at 3:18am PST   The front of the shop is rather small, but after opening the door and upon entering we were overwhelmed by the size of Ecocentre. Whooot! It’s a (small) supermarket! The place is packed with vegan goodies, food items like cereals, cookies, pasta, but also faux meats, icecream, cheese and pies and cakes! And also some books, cosmetics body and care products and cleaning products. It is so exciting to visit a vegan shop, and certainly one this size! But also so reassuring, since one does not have to check labels to see …

Enter the vegan world of Un Monde Vegan, Paris

Shop review #36 – Un Monde vegan is a vegan shop in the center of Paris, on the north side of Le Marais. We paid them a visit during our city trip in Paris, in June. It is a reasonably sized shop, comparable to the size of organic stores like Biovita and Origin’O in Belgium. Un Monde Vegan is stacked with vegan goodies, from the usual suspects like plant milks and vegan burgers, but also books, icecream, cheezes and cosmetics. It is so exciting but also relaxing to look around in an all vegan shop. Not having to check labels to see whether any goods contain animal products (which seems to have become second nature 😉 ! We had the same feeling when we visisted the vegan shop Veganz in Vienna. We couldn’t do any real shopping, as we were with our tandem bike. But we did buy some drinks, as it was a very hot day in Paris! Here are some more pics of Un Monde Vegan, which give you an idea of what they have …

Shopping at organic shop Mordan, Ostend (2)

Shop review #33 – Mordan is an organic shop in Ostend (at the Belgian coast) and has two locations: the oldest shop is the city center (right next to the main shopping street Kappelestraat) and has been there for decades. The other one is at the edge of Ostend, on the Torhoutsesteenweg (review of this one is here: shop review #16). Mordan now also has a webshop, with free delivery throughout Belgium (for any order above 25€). The shop Mordan has been there as long as I can remember. As I grew up in Ostend (and didn’t live far from it!), I know the shop quite well. Mordan in Ostend is not a vegan shop, but sells many vegan products that you won’t find so easily in ‘regular’ shops. From vegan cheese to chia seeds from coconut oil to vegan chocolate, from vegan bread spreads to vegan desserts. Note: as is the case in many organic shops in Belgium, there is unfortunately also a ‘meat and cheese’ counter: One big difference with the other shop at the Torhoustesteenweg is there is no …

Shopping at GoVeg vegan shop, Liège

Shop review #32 – Goveg is a vegan shop in city center of Liège (in the south of Belgium, 200 km from Bruges). We had already got to know this shop during Vegan Summerfest in Ghent last year (see review here). We planned a trip to Liège to visit the Human Zoos exposition in La Cité Miroir (more about this very interesting exhibition in a later blogpost!) so this was a perfect occasion to do some shopping at GoVeg. The Goveg vegan shop is nor far from restaurant Como en Casa (actually in the same street), where we had lunch (review will follow). The shop is not really big, but it is packed with the ‘usual suspects’: body and care products, soy chuncks, vegan shoes, grains, nuts, jam, cereals, chocolate, etc. Also several coolers with vegan cheezes, sausages, pizza, burgers, etc. I was happy to find a pack of ‘vegan eggs’ from Follow Your Heart, which I quite like to eat scrambled! And also the vegan caviar that I had discovered first in Ghent and later also bought at …

Vegan specialties at shop Moor & Moor, Ghent

Shop review #28 – Moor & Moor is a little shop in Ghent, with many vegan food specialties. I had seen a facebook post with a photo of vegan caviar for sale at Moor & Moor, so during one of my lasts visits to Ghent, I wanted to go check out this shop. I already blogged about the vegan caviar (see my post here). Moor & Moor is in the city center, close to the main shopping street (Veldstraat) and close to Dille & Kamille. Moor & Moor has a small counter inside and a terrace in front, where you can have your coffee and a piece of raw vegan pie, or even some icecream! Pies are from raw food chef Julie. Although there are many vegan products availabe at Moor & Moor (and some brands that are not readily found in other Belgian shops), it is not an all vegan shop. So do not be surprised to find grilled crickets or ansjovis next to the kale chips. I suspect that the store concept is not so much …

Vegan caviar on toast!

Recently bought this orange and black ‘vegan caviar’ in Ghent.  It’s made of – among other things – seaweed extract and guar gum (see list of ingredients on photo). The website of the brand Vegetarian Caviar Club also lists a green version (with wasabi), but that one wasn’t available at the store (Moor & Moor). I liked this vegan caviar because of its taste, looks and texture. And of course because there are no animal rights violations involved. Traditional stealing of fish eggs from beluga or other fish for caviar involves killing the fish. This has led to the near extinction of beluga, which has prompted the development of fish farms for the production of caviar (which of course also entails environmental and animal rights issues). I really cannot tell whether it tastes similar to fish eggs or not. I once tasted a drop of caviar in my teenage years, but the taste did not leave a lasting impression (at least not to last 30 years afterwards 😉 But for me measuring up to the ‘real thing’ is absolutely not a prerequisite. We were both more fond …
