#146 Vegan fine dining at Gentle Gourmet, Paris

restaurant review #146 – Gentle Gourmet is a gastronomic vegan restaurant in the center of Paris. It is located on the East side of town, in between de Gare de Lyon and the Bastille. We had made a reservation a couple of weeks before going to Paris, as we surely did not want to miss out on the opportunity of dining at Gentle Gourmet! There’s a small terrace on the pavement in front of the restaurant, but because it was a really hot evening, and there was a lot of traffic passing by (quite a busy raod) we decided to dine inside, in the veranda of the restaurant. We were warmly welcomed and were offered the menus. It was not easy to choose! So many options (and everything vegan), and all the options sounded very promising! We were served a small appetizer: a glass with melon and ccumber juice. Nice! Although some more hearthy nibbles would also have been nice. As a starter, we had the Sea inspiration dish (13€) and the Asparagus in four …

#143 Vegan burgers for lunch at Season Square, Paris

restaurant review #143 – Season Square is a vegan fast food restaurant in Paris. It’s on the east side of town, just next to the Bibliothèque Nationale (the National Library) and the Seine, on the other side of the Parc de Bercy. As such, it is a bit outside of the touristic center, and there are not many restaurants in the area. As we were in Paris for a concert at the Bercy (now called Accor Arena) and stayed not too far away, Season Square was our first stop, for lunch. Season Square is a bright, modern place, and serves burgers, bowls, soups and some desserts. They also offer take away. It is self-service (one orders at counter, take an alarm device with you to your table which beeps when your order is ready, and you can go pick up your order at the counter). There was no white wine available (they did have small bottles of red wine). There was free tap water avilable in bottles at a seperate counter (where the knives and forkes …

#137 Nice lunch in the swamp of Paris: Le Potager du Marais

Restaurant review #137 – Le Potager du Marais is a vegan restaurant in Paris. It is located – as the name says – in the Marais, which is a lively and cosy (but also quite touristic) neighbourhood. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and trendy shops in the area. Marais is French for swamp, which refers to the region’s original state, and potager stands for vegetable gardener. So that makes Le Potager du marais the vegetable gardener of the swamp 😉 It’s a rather small place, and tables are closely together, but yet there’s still a cosy atmosphere. There’s also a small terrace in front. We were here for lunch during our city trip in Paris in June. We didn’t have a reservation, and were lucky that there was a table available (we were quite late for lunch, so people already started to leave). Service was very friendly, and we immediately felt welcome! There was tap water on the table (and was refilled), which we appreciated immensly, as it was a very hot couple of …

Take a look around! Adding travel snapshots to reviews

A couple of weeks ago, I decided to add snapshots of the surroundings to blogposts. So whenever I publish a post with a review of a shop or restaurant, there are now not only photos of the restaurant, but also one or two photos, or even a short video, of the area. A city view, a particular monument, or a spectacular landscape. It gives you an idea of the surroundings (albeit just a glimp), and some of the things we have spotted during our visit to that city or area. And for me it’s also a way of documenting some memories from that particular city trip or visit! Here are some of the pics that were included in recent reviews. Some link to Instagram. #133 Lunch at vegan brasserie 2eme Art, Paris

Restaurant review #133 – Brasserie 2eme Art is a vegan brasserie in the city center of Paris, in between the Louvre and the Centre Pompidou. We were here in June, when we were in Paris for a couple of days, before heading to Normandy. There is a large terrace in front of the brasserie. Tables are close next to each other though. Luckily, we were rather late for lunch, and there were not so many people on the terrace. It was blooming hot in Paris (nearly 40°C) and we were happy there were some umbrellas offering shade (inside was rather full when we arrived). UPDATE — see below This is part of the menu at Brasserie 2ème Art (there are also pizza’s available): PS: the red glow is because we were sitting underneath a red umbrella 😉 For drinks we had fresh juice: one can choose fresh juices with different ingredientes, and I ordered carrot and apple (4,90€). A beer was 3,90€. Glass of wine 5€. We also were served free tap water (refilled even). …

Enter the vegan world of Un Monde Vegan, Paris

Shop review #36 – Un Monde vegan is a vegan shop in the center of Paris, on the north side of Le Marais. We paid them a visit during our city trip in Paris, in June. It is a reasonably sized shop, comparable to the size of organic stores like Biovita and Origin’O in Belgium. Un Monde Vegan is stacked with vegan goodies, from the usual suspects like plant milks and vegan burgers, but also books, icecream, cheezes and cosmetics. It is so exciting but also relaxing to look around in an all vegan shop. Not having to check labels to see whether any goods contain animal products (which seems to have become second nature 😉 ! We had the same feeling when we visisted the vegan shop Veganz in Vienna. We couldn’t do any real shopping, as we were with our tandem bike. But we did buy some drinks, as it was a very hot day in Paris! Here are some more pics of Un Monde Vegan, which give you an idea of what they have …

#125 Delicious and beautiful pastry at VG Pâtisserie, Paris

Restaurant review #125 – shop review #35- VG Pâtisserie is an organic and vegan pastry shop/bistro in Paris. We had seen pictures of their beautiful creations on social media, and definitely did not want to miss this on our visit to Paris a couple of weeks ago! It is located on the east side of town, in between the Place de la Bastille and the famous cemetery Père Lachaise. In the morning, VG Pâtisserie serves breakfast and brunch, in the afternoon only pattisserie. One can also place an order and collect at the shop. We saw a lot of people coming in and collecting their order or buying pastry from the shop (also because it was Father’s Day in France). VG Pâtisserie is a rather small place, with only two seating tables. We were lucky that people from one table just left as we arrived, and we could take a seat. Choice of pastry in the counter was rather limited (3 sorts of pastry), but we were there on a Sunday, the day before their …

Vegan Matt & Nat bags and wallet from shop Végissime

Shop review #12 – Matt & Natt is a vegan Canadian company which makes handbags, briefcases, wallets and other accessories. I had my eyes on one particular bag, but didn’t find it in Belgium. Ordering directly from the company in Canada (or other American webshops) would entail paying tens of euros to customs and taxes for import in the EU. I had often encounterd such unpleasant surprises from orders in the US in the past, so did not want to have that happen again. The Belgian branch of webshop Zalando has some products of Matt & Nat available, but not the bag, nor the colour I was looking for. I eventually found the bag I was looking for (Blinkin Citrus) on a French – Paris based vegan webshop, Vegissime. Unfortunately also with high postal costs for shipping to Belgium (15euro as opposed to free delivery within France), which I think is absurd living so close to the French border! Alas, the ‘Union’ of Europe does not extend to the postal services yet 😦 Ordering online at French webshop Vegissime and …
