#246 Nice dinner at Rode Peper en Basilicum, Ede (NL)

restaurant review #246 – Rode Peper en Basilicum is located in the city center of Ede, near De Hoge Veluwe in the Netherlands. I had seen online that they have some vegan options and so I made a reservation, and inquired about their vegan options and this was confirmed. It definitely turned out to be necessary that I had made the reservation, because after we came, the place soon filled up. There are several vegan options clearly labelled on the menu.

#192 Vegan cheese platter and homemade croquettes at Récollets, Antwerp

restaurant review #192 – Récollets is a new vegan restaurant in Antwerp (est. September 2017). It is in the city center, just a 5 minute walk from the Cathedral. (Note: see update below) Récollets has a very nice variety on the menu, and lots of options to choose from. It was difficult to make a decision! The wines were also said to be vegan. We choose the cheese platter (19€, came with bread on the side) and the cheeze croquettes (12€), with additional fries on the side (2€). The vegan cheeses are from Serotonina, a Polish company. The cheeses can also be bought at Récollets, but onfortunately we still had a show to go to that evening (Paul Simon’s farewell tour). And it was a very hot day, and we didn’t have any cooler in the car neither. For dessert we shared a coupe brésilienne (7,50€). It was ages since I had eaten a coupe brésilienne at a restaurant (well, propably since going vegan)! The icecream is homemade by Récollets. Definitely one of the best …

Nice icecream and cookies at Fresco, Middelburg (NL)

shop review #42 – Fresco is an Italian icecream bar in the shopping street of Middelburg (in Zeeland, the Netherlands). We went here for dessert after our nice lunch at Stoom. Vegan options of icecream are standardly available, and they are indicated with red dots. Clever! Non-vegans who come up to the counter have no idea that they are actually ordering vegan icecream. They also sell vegan cookies! We had two icecreams: one with pistache and mango, the other with pumpkin, carrot, ginger and blueberry. Nice! And bought some cookies for our biking trip that afternoon back to Vlissingen, where we took the ferry back home. Lovely vegan Icecream and waffles at Yorica! London

shop review#38 – Yorica is a vegan icecream shop in London. There are two locations, one in Notting Hill, and one in Soho. Upon our arrival in London this Summer for a short city trip, the one in Soho was our first stop, as it was just around the corner from where we stayed! All the products sold at Yorica are not only vegan, but also free from nuts and gluten. You can buy icecream, waffles and pancakes to take away, or to eat at Yorica’s itself, although there is not that much space inside (some bar stools inside and a bench in front of the shop). One orders at the counter and the order is immediately delivered. After the order is handed to you, you can add some sprinkles on top if you wish. We were a bit overwhelmed by all the possibilities on the menu (not being used to having that many options 😉 : several flavours of icecream, frozen ‘yoghurt’, waffles, and pancakes. There was some queuing up to the counter, but …

#131 Great buffet at Noordoever, Louvain (2)

restaurant review #131 – Noordoever is a new vegetarian restaurant in Louvain (opened in 2015). It is at the edge of the city, close to the docks and the old factories of beer brewing company Stella Artois. Noordoever actually means the North Shore, as it is indeed on the north shore of the docks. We already wrote a review about Noordoever here. This review is from a visit in Spring of 2017, when we visited for lunch. The buffet is not all you can eat, but one pays per weight (if once compares that with other all you can eat buffet restaurants, that does make it more expensive). The buffet has a nice variety of dishes, some are vegetarian, but most are vegan, and the ingredients are clearly indicated. This was our lunch: We paid a total of 47,44€ for lunch. All in all soemwhat expensive (also considering it is self service). But we do like restaurant Noordoever a lot: it’s spacious, clean, nicely renovated and has a relaxed atmosphere, and the food is very nice. …

#107 Nice lunch at vegetarian restaurant Noordoever, Louvain

Restaurant review #107 – Noordoever is a new place at the edge of Louvain, on the north side (opened in 2015). It is close to the docks and the old factories of beer brewing company Stella Artois. The area around Noordoever is nicely renovated, with new appartments and a nice open space for events and get togethers next to the docks. Restaurant Noordoever is a nice spacious place, with large windows and as such very bright. It’s a lovely decor. Some chairs have cushions, which is nice and comfortable. There is also a seperate room for meetings or group lunch. You cannot order a la carte, but there is a buffet with loads of options to choose from. Noordoever is a vegetarian restaurant, but most dishes at the buffet were vegan, which was clearly indicated next to the dishes (also with the ingredients of the dish). The buffet normally starts at 12 o clock, but it was was more like 12.15 when the buffet was ready and all dishes were presented and we could start lunch. For drinks we had a …

Shopping at organic store Het Natuurhuis, Antwerp

Shop review #26 – Het Natuurhuis is an organic shop in Antwerp, and exists since the seventies. It translates as ‘Nature home‘. Natuurhuis now has three locations in the Antwerp area: one in the city center (Otto Veniusstraat), one at Zuid (Verlatstraat) and one in Merksem (Eethuisstraat). These photos are from my recent visit to Het Natuurhuis in the city center. It is located close to Antwerps main shopping street the Meir, and about 10 minutes from the central train station. It is a fairly large shop (not as big as the shops from organic chain Bioplanet, but about the same size as Biovita in Bruges and Mordan in Ostend). As my visits to Het Natuurhuis are most often on my way back to the train station, I am mostly pressed for time, or too exhausted after some city dwelling to have a relaxed look around in the shop. I have however spotted several vegan items that I would love to take with me, but the vegan icecream from Professor Grunschnabel or the frozen items from De Vegetarische Slager (The Vegetarian Butcher) would not last …

Vegan food at hardcore festival IEPERFEST, Ypres

Ieperfest is a 3-day hardcore music festival, just outside Ypres (Ieper, 75km from Bruges, Belgium). Since day one, more than 20 years ago, all the food at Ieperfest is vegan! It was two years ago that we went to Ieperfest (see our blogpost here), and it was a wet edition in 2014. This time, it was a beautiful Summer weekend, and we went again one afternoon to try out the vegan goodies and enjoy the atmosphere. We tried to taste something from each foodstall, but by the end of the afternoon were too stuffed to accomplish that plan 😉 Payment for food and drinks was with tokens: we paid 66 euros for 30 tokens in total. Our plan was to start our food trip with the Flemish stew with seitan and potatoes from the Ieperfest Hardcore Foodstall, but it was announced it was only available from 5PM onwards. Bummer! So we started with a Dutch weedburger and some ‘Wish ‘n Chips’, that latter being a new ‘algae’ based dish from TDW. Nice! Here’s an overview of the food and drinks we had:   …

#72 Vegan icecream (and more) at Bar Italiano, Ghent ***

Restaurant review #72 – After our lovely lunch at saladbar Zukini in Ghent (see my review here), we went to Bar Italiano for a vegan icecream. It is only a 5 minute walk from the Overpoortstraat. This was a bit of a trip down memory lane too, as this was the neighbourhood where we lived a couple of years as students! There were three vegan ice-cream flavours: chocolate, speculoos and mint. The ice-creams are homemade and based on rice. I went for the chocolate and mint, my friend for the speculoos and chocolate (2€ for a scoop of ice cream, so this totalled 8€). I had already tasted this icecream before, at Vegan Summerfest in 2015 (see our blogpost with the review here). And it’s really good! Afterwards, we had some tea. There’s a nice selection of teas to choose from at the counter. (2,50€ or if you combine it with an ice cream only 2,30€). There are always vegan options available at Bar Italiano (eg pastas) and on Thursday vegan specialties (like vegan lasagne). The owner was very friendly and seemed very …

#70 Nice lunch at saladbar Zukini, Ghent ****

Restaurant review #70 – Zukini is a new saladbar in the Overpoortstraat in Ghent, which is famously (or infamously if you prefer) known for its many student pubs. It had been ages since I last walked through this street. But sure enough, the pavements were still drenched in the smell of beer! 😉 Apparently I walked by the address of Zukini two times, and then looked up the street number again on my phone, to realise it was in the big building where the university restaurant used to be (many moons ago, that just shows how old I am ;-). The building now houses a supermarket and other shops, and at the left of the entrance, you can also find saladbar Zukini. (UPDATE: see below) I was meeting a friend here for lunch. Salabar Zukini is spacious and bright, clean and tidy. Everyting was spotlessly clean, and also seemed brand new. Nice photos in the bathroom too (see pic below 😀 Although the seats are empty on the photo, the place soon filled up for lunch, with going by their age looked like mostly …
