restaurant review #243 – Cèpes is the restaurant of Hotel De Sterrenberg. It is located just outside the western entrance of De Hoge Veluwe, a nature reserve in the middle of the Netherlands.
We had made a reservation for dinner the day prior at the registration desk of the hotel, and had asked for a vegan menu. It was noted and said to be no problem, and that the kicthen staff know very well what vegan means (I explained just in case 😉
When arriving in the restaurant, the waitress seemed to be taken by surprise (about our reservation and the vegan aspect) and went to check in the kitchen regarding the vegan menu. She came back and said that the kitchen staff could ‘freewheel’ a menu for us (??).
So something must have gone wrong with our reservation, and we were getting a bit anxious.
Nonetheless, we had a lovely dinner.
We were seated at the outside terrace for some drinks and appetizers, and later moved to the restaurant room.
This is what we were served:
- A small appetizer with dried tomato, watermelon and nasturtium, and some crackers and hummus
- Appetizer with red beet, grapefruit, pistache nuts and balsamico
- Main dish: pearl barley, tomato, asparagus, carrot, turnip, samphire
- Dessert: Rhubarb, frozen celery, apple ice, with tarragon powder
The appetizer and main dish were good, but no out of the ordinary combinations or flavours. The dessert was really special and a pleasant susprise.
Overall a very nice dinner, and at 37€ pp. a more than resaonable price!
The seatings were comfortable and the restaurant room is spacious.
Really liked the wooden ‘head’ statues of animals (throughout the restaurant and hotel). So much better than stuffed animal heads 🙂
There is a fully accessible toilet and toilets were clean (forgot to take a pic this time!)
All in all: small hiccup with the resevation, but we had an enjoyable evening for a very reasonable price. Really liked it!
