#139 Hustle and bustle in Soho. Dinner at Mildreds, London

Restaurant review #139 – Mildreds is a vegetarian restaurant in London, and has four locations: Soho, Camden, Kings Cross and Dalston. We went to the one in Soho during our short trip to London this Summer. It is in the south side of Soho, near the very busy Piccadilly Circus. We could not make a reservation, as the restaurant has a no booking policy (which we do find quite annoying, and has left us avoiding certain places in the past). But we had no other dinner plans for that first evening in London, and the restaurant was not too far from out hotel, so we headed there early hoping to get a spot. We arrived a bit before 6PM, and luckily, there was still space. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu and the wine list also clearly indicates the vegan wines (I think they were all vegan). We were served free water, which was nice! Glass of wine was £5,5. This what we had for dinner: Gyoza dumplings, £6 Hummus, £6 Wood roasted …

#132 Our dinners at veggie bistro De Plaats, Bruges

Restaurant review #132 – De Plaats is a vegetarian restaurant in the city center of Bruges, close to the central market square and the Belfry (where restaurant Lotus used to be). De Plaats literally translates as ‘The Place’. De Plaats opened in 2016, and we had been eager to go check it out for several months. This review is from two visits, respectively in April and May 2017. The menu lists 10 dishes, of which about half are vegan (clearly indicated). We ordered some drinks (wine was said to be vegan), which came swiftly. We had the lentil dish (15€) and the vegan burger with potatoes (14€). The food was good, but we were culinairy a bit underwhelmed by the dishes, all in all just being a pre-bought burger and falafels (from La Vie est Belle), with lentils and potatoes, and salad on the side.  Something we would also eat as a weekday meal at home, when we don’t have the time nor motivation to cook up something more fancy and just flip a storebought …

Simple vegan meringues

Vegan meringues, impossible you think? Think again! It all started with a simple post a couple of weeks back from someone who had experimented making vegan meringues and posted the result in the immensly popular facebookgroup What fat vegans eat. The secret ingredient? Chickpea brine! When you whip the brine from jarred or canned chicpeas, it looks like whipped egg-white. Add sugar, put in the oven, et voilà! People have been experimenting with all kinds of variations in shapes and colours, adding ingredients here and there to make it more stable (less fluid), using different kinds of sweeteners, and now also making other things with whipped chickpea brine like chocolate mousse. The meringue hype (or chickpea hype) has even resulted in a seperate facebook group ‘vegan meringue – hits and misses‘ where people post photos of their creations. So I decided to give it a go. Without any fancy ingredients. And it works! recipe simple vegan meringues Just plain simple chickpea brine and powdered sugar, and some drops of lemon juice. I used the brine of two jars of organic chickpeas (contain chickpeas, …
