#193 The Last dinner at Loving Hut, Maastricht (NL)

restaurant review #193 – Loving Hut is an international chain with vegan restaurants all over the world.ย There are already severalย reviews of Loving Hutsย we have visited up on my blog (see here). Every restaurant has its unique style and menu, and depends a lot on who is running the place (ranging from fastfood burgers and hotdogs to more elaborate menus). The Loving Hut in Maastricht was at the edge of the city. I’m writing ‘was’ since it closed at the end of June 2018. We had already visited the Loving in Hut in Maastricht five years ago and wanted to return during our holiday break in the area. There was an announcement at the door stating that the restaurant was closing in a couple of days time due to the retirement of owner and chef. So we were lucky to have enjoyed a dinner there a last time! Loving Hut Maastricht had a very extensive menu, with lots of mock ‘meat’ and mock ‘fish’. The cuisine was Asian inspired (Chinese would be my best guess). They …

#128 Lovely dinner at vegetarian resto Leaf, Rotterdam (NL)

Restaurant review #128 – Leaf is a vegetarian restaurant in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Most of the menu is vegan, there are only a handful of options which are non-vegan. The restaurant used to be inย Scheveningen, but moved to Rotterdam recently. The food at Leaf seems to be a mixture of Asian inspired recipes (Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc). We visited a couple of weeks ago, with friends. We had made a reservation, but that didn’t seem to be necessary, as there was still plenty of space available (it was a Friday evening). Restaurant Leaf is a spacious place, with a large terrace out front. Although it was a nice Summer evening, it was too windy to sit outside. Inside there’s a downstairs section and some more seating on the balcony upstairs. It was hard to choose from the extensive menu! We’re not used to having so many options ๐Ÿ˜‰ The non-vegan items are clearly indicated as such on the menu card, and the spicy ones are marked with stars. Restaurant Leaf offers a lot of ‘faux’ …

#106 Nice dinner and service at Xu’s Cooking, Vienna

Restaurant Review #106. This is the last restaurant review from our visit to Vienna in Austria last Summer. Here’s an overview of all the restaurants we visited in Vienna. Xu’s Cooking is a vegetarian Taiwanese restaurant on the edge of city center of Vienna. It is a spacious place, with a terrace outside. The interior did ooze a bit of a somber and outdated atmosphere though. Xu’s Cooking has a buffet at lunch time, but we were here for dinner. There is a very extensive menu list. Most dishes are vegan (non-vegan dishes are labelled with a *). There are a lot of dishes with mock meats and ‘fish’. Not being used to so much variety on a menu list any more, it was hard to choose! This is what we had: We were too stuffed for desserts, but were served some banana balls and hot drinks anyway! A very enjoyable dining out experience. Although I am no fan of labelling and especially shaping vegan foods as ‘fish’ or ‘chicken’ย (I understand it lowers the treshold …

#90 – Nice lunch at Vegaverso, Louvain (3)

Restaurant review #90 – Vegaverso is a vegan lunch bar in the city center of Louvain. Vegaversoย serves mainly sandwiches, burgers and also some hot dishes like stews or pasta (the menu varies).ย We’ve been here a couple of times before, and impressions from some of those visits can be seen here (#27)ย and here (#34). Vegaverso is a lovely charming place,ย soberly but stylishly decorated, with a relaxed atmosphere. Service by Tilly and her mom is always super friendly. It’s semi-self service: you order at the bar, take your drinks with you, and when your food is readyย they bring the order to your table. Our you can also buy toย take away. The menu is pretty extensive, with several burgers, wraps, hotdogs to choose from. Also many different vegan sauces, and different types of bread. The combinations are endless! Also a great variety of vegan pastry and cookies.ย And the menu changes every once in a while too, so there’s always something new to try. We visitedย Vegaverso again in Julyย for lunch.ย This is what we had: A lovelyย lunch and more than …

Finding vegan goodies at Asian Supermarket Chow Chun, Ostend

Shop review #24 – Chow Chun is an Asian supermarket in the city center of Ostend. It is located in between the Casino Kursaal and the Kapellestraat (Ostend’s main shopping street). It is not a vegan shop, but we did see a selection of vegan goodiesย that areย not soย commonly foundย in regular shops in Belgium. And also some rather rare fresh vegetables. These photos give you an impression of the size of the store and what’s for sale. Note that not all items on the photos are necessarily vegan, since it’s not a vegan shop.   Here are some items that caught our eye (I didn’t have time to check all of them for ingredients, but at first glance they looked vegan): This is what we bought:ย mock duck and mock chicken, soybean pudding, crackers and fried gluted with peanuts (seitan). (11,30โ‚ฌ). Chow Chun, location Van Iseghemlaan 50 8400 Oostende +32 (0)59 80 13 68 website:ย https://www.hetwinkelweb.be/handelaar/detail/chow-chun-supermarkt
