#148 Nice lunch at vegan resto Funky Jungle, Mechelen (2)

Restaurant review#148 – Funky Jungle is a vegan restaurant in the center of Mechelen. It is located right at the foot of the St Rumbold’s cathedral.I had visited Funky Jungle in the Summer of 2016 (review here). Jim was in Mechelen a couple of weeks ago for a conference, and went here for lunch. Funky Jungle started as a vegetarian restaurant, but has gone completey vegan. The menu mentions that everything is plantbased.  The wines are vegan and organic. This was his lunch: pumpkin and ginger soup (5€) and chili sin carne with rice (11,95€). Dessert: a chocomousse (4,6€), made with aquafaba (the magical brine of chickpeas, also used to make vegan meringues!) . The food was nice, service was swift and friendly. All in all, good value for money! Great addition to Mechelen! Photos of the interior, the toilets and the terrace can be seen in our previous review of Funky Jungle. #81 – Light lunch at new veggie resto Funky Jungle, Mechelen ***

Restaurant review #81 – Funky Jungle is a new vegetarian restaurant (bistro style) in the center of Mechelen (in between Antwerp and Brussels). It is located at the foot of St Rumbold’s cathedral. I visited Funky Jungle a couple of weeks ago for lunch with a friend. On the other side of the road, there’s a nice terrace (with robust chairs with armrests, hurray!) at the foot of the St Rumboldtower . The vegan options are clearly marked on menu, although there was some uncertainty about the burger buns being vegan or not (so we didn’t choose that). We shared a bowl of beet hummus as a starter (4,50€), it came with crackers and sourdough bread. The waitress wasn’t sure about the crackers being vegan, so we didn’t eat those (afterwards she did show us the ingredient list of the crackers, and they are vegan!). For drinks we had virgin mojitos (4,50€). The beet hummus was really nice (my photo failed miserably, I was trying to get the restaurant in the background in the photo, and as such lost focus on …

#20 Restaurant Lan Na Thai, Mechelen **

Restaurant review #20 – Lan Na Thai is a Thai restaurant in the center of Mechelen (Malines). It’s about a big 5 minute walk from the market place. (** See NOTE at bottom of post) We made a reservation for a Saturday evening, at 7PM. Good thing we made a reservation, because the restaurant soon filled, and the owner had to refuse several patrons. It’s not a big restaurant (I’m guessing about 20 to 25 seats) and tables are placed pretty close to each other. Update  – see below –  The menu on their website mentions several vegetarian dishes separately, of which most seem to be vegan. We asked whether the vegetarian dishes we ordered did not contain any dairy or egg, and the waitress confirmed – although seemingly a bit confused by our question at first – that they didn’t. Nonetheless we did get a bowl of prawn crackers as a free appetizer, not really reassuring. Let’s hope the staff in the kitchen was more knowledgeable (one is of course never 100% sure when dining out that everything served is vegan). We …
