#81 – Light lunch at new veggie resto Funky Jungle, Mechelen ***

Restaurant review #81 – Funky Jungle is a new vegetarian restaurant (bistro style) in the center of Mechelen (in between Antwerp and Brussels). It is located at the foot of St Rumbold’s cathedral.

I visited Funky Jungle a couple of weeks ago for lunch with a friend. On the other side of the road, there’s a nice terrace (with robust chairs with armrests, hurray!) at the foot of the St Rumboldtower .
The vegan options are clearly marked on menu, although there was some uncertainty about the burger buns being vegan or not (so we didn’t choose that).

We shared a bowl of beet hummus as a starter (4,50€), it came with crackers and sourdough bread. The waitress wasn’t sure about the crackers being vegan, so we didn’t eat those (afterwards she did show us the ingredient list of the crackers, and they are vegan!). For drinks we had virgin mojitos (4,50€). The beet hummus was really nice (my photo failed miserably, I was trying to get the restaurant in the background in the photo, and as such lost focus on the setting on the table! 😛 ).

We each ordered a salad: salade agrum and a quinoa salad (each 8,50€). The salads were nice (and cheap!), but it would have been nicer with some dressing or sauce. I wouldn’t mind if the salads would have some extra ingredients that give them some more ‘bite’ (like some soy chuncks, or seitan strips, …), even if that increases the price.

Funky Jungle also offers lots of cocktails. I forgot to ask about the availablility of vegan wines (not indicated on menu).
Service was very friendly. I had the impression they were still not sure about some items being vegan or not, but they assured us that they would look it up (for example the burger buns).
Toilet was OK. Paper towels to dry your hands. Inside looked spacious too, with not so comfortable looking chairs though (wooden pub chairs).

All in all: we had a nice lunch, for a very reasonable price!
Funky Jungle is a great addition to Mechelen. If I am ever in Mechelen again, I would love to visit for a second time 🙂

We ate there a few weeks ago. Very friendly indeed. We asked if there were vegan specials. The waitress had to ask in the kitchen but there were non. As it was dinner time we didn’t feel like having a salad so we went for the 2 vegan pasta versions. Both were very served very quickly after our order. The menu states that everything is prepared freshly but that was not possible in that short time. Both dishes were not really warm and were a bit disapointing. Only few ingredients were used. Yes it is cheap but I found it even to much for what we got. A missed chance according to us because there are not much possibilities to eat out as a vegan in Mechelen.

    • Oh, that’s a pity! I hope they will still improve and take your feedback into consideration!
Thanks for your comment Eva 🙂

  2. What a great resource your blog is for travellers and delicious inspiration for non-travellers!

    Bon Appetite!

  3. Because we live in Mechelen, my husband & I saw this restaurant recently. We thought; hey, here we should go eat one time & now, you gave us a review! I don’t like the darker inside of the resto. But I think, we will go out to eat on the large terrace opposite the street! Looks cool there! 🙂
