#271 Nice for a quick and small lunch, Bagels & Beans, Den Bosch

restaurant review #271 – Bagels & Beans is a chain with several locations throughout the Netherlands. There’s always something vegan available, and on our visits staff has always been very friendly to check for ingredients (see previous reviews of Bagels & Beans). This review is from a visit to the Bagels & Beans in Den Bosch a couple of months ago, before the measures due to the COVID19 pandemic started. We visited Den Bosch for a book presentation in the Avans Hogeschool (College) and this Bagels & Beans at the edge of Den Bosch is very closeby. We were there for lunch and the place was packed and we were lucky there was one table free (btw, loved the architecture of the building along side this water lake nearby – see photo below).

#265 Nice lunch at vegetarian restaurant Ooogst, Kortrijk

restaurant review #265 – This review is from a restaurant visit to vegetarian Ooogst a couple of months ago at the beginning of 2020, just before the lockdown measures due to the COVID19 pandemic started. On August 17, just two days ago, the restaurant announced its closure, due to the consequences of the lockdown on the business. I’m posting this review anyway, not only for archival reasons for myself, but as a nice memory from a visit to a lovely place. Ooogst was situated at the edge of Kortrijk, in a renovated industrial hangar. It opened in June 2019. It was a spacious place, mixed with rooms for people to come work there, or have a work meeting.

#163 Nice lunch at Li O Lait, Bruges

restaurant review #163 – Li O Lait is a lunch/coffee bar in the city center of Bruges, close to ‘t Zand. I had lunch here a couple of weeks ago with a friend. I had inquired back in 2016 whether they had any vegan options, and received a positive reply. Li O Lait had also posted an announcement about vegan bagels in May 2017 on their facebookpage and I had seen several posts about vegan cake being served. Before going, I telephoned again to be sure they serve something vegan, as there is no mention about anything vegan on their website. And they do! Reservation was said not to be necessary for lunch, if we came early. And so we did. There are no vegan options mentioned on the menu, but there’s a line that says that vegans can ask what’s on offer. So we did, and this is what we had for lunch: the soup of the day, and the bagel with tomato, salad and guacamole (bagel bread is said to be vegan). For dessert, we had …

#151 Bagels and salads at Sanseveria Bagelsalon, Ostend

Restaurant review #151 – This is the second location of Sanseveria Bagelsalon. The orginal one is in Bruges, which I visited a year ago (see review). Meanwhile, Sanseveria bagelsalon has comfirmed that the bagels (bread buns) are vegan, and now also has some vegan options on the menu (one standardly vegan bagel, the other is vegetarian and can be veganised, and then there’s also a salad). They are clearly labelled on the menu. It is in the city center in the the Wittenonnenstraat (the “white nuns” street), next to book shop Corman. UPDATE – see below I was here for lunch a couple of weeks ago. I had an orange juice (rather small glass, but then it also was only 3€) and the bagel with avocado, grilled eggplant, tomato and salad (8€). Didn’t have to wait long, and it was nice! When I arrived the place was quite full (it’s not really big, I think there’s room for about 12-14 people). And I asked if I could join other people at their table, which was …

#78 Light salad lunch at Sanseveria Bagelsalon, Bruges ***

Restaurant review #78 – Sanseveria Bagelsalon is a cosy little place in the city center of Bruges. It’s just a 5 minute walk from the Burg and City hall, and near the famous Rozenhoedkaai, where many tourists align to take that famous snapshot of Bruges’ canals and the Belfry. I visited Sanseveria Bagelsalon with a friend a couple of weeks ago. There are no vegan options standardly available on the menu, but upon making the reservation, my vegan friend who had been there before requested vegan for two. Sanseveria is the name of a succulent that used to be very popular in Flemish pubs and househoulds. I also read once that is one of the hardiest plants to stand sigarette smoke, so that may also be the reason why it survived the poor oxygen environment in the pubs in the old days. After being considered ‘old fashionned’ for a couple of years, the plants are now making their way onto windowstills around the country and are now hip again! We inquired about the ingredients of the bagels (bread), …

#37 Our lunch at Bagels & Beans, Alkmaar (NL) ***

Restaurant review #37 – Travelling up north towards the island of Texel, we stopped in Alkmaar (in between Amsterdam and Texel). We originally planned to have our lunch at Thai restaurant Chada Thai in Alkmaar, since that restaurant is explicitly mentioned on Happy Cow as being very vegan friendly, to arrive at its frontdoor and find the restaurant … not open. Backup plan: a quick visit to Bagels & Beans, where – as the name suggest – a large variety of bagels is served. Bagels & Beans is a chain with several locations throughout the Netherlands. There’s always something vegan available, and staff was very friendly to check for ingredients (see also the note inside the menu – taking note of food allergies). We had the hummus bagel (standardly vegan) and the avocado bagel (without the cream cheese, but with hummus) with respectively a sesame bun and a tomato bun (asked whether they are vegan and got confirmation). Very nice! And very cheap too (5,40€ for the avocado bagel and 3,95 for the hummus bagel). Small orange juice was only …
