#137 Nice lunch in the swamp of Paris: Le Potager du Marais

Restaurant review #137 – Le Potager du Marais is a vegan restaurant in Paris. It is located – as the name says – in the Marais, which is a lively and cosy (but also quite touristic) neighbourhood. There are plenty of restaurants, cafés and trendy shops in the area. Marais is French for swamp, which refers to the region’s original state, and potager stands for vegetable gardener. So that makes Le Potager du marais the vegetable gardener of the swamp 😉 It’s a rather small place, and tables are closely together, but yet there’s still a cosy atmosphere. There’s also a small terrace in front. We were here for lunch during our city trip in Paris in June. We didn’t have a reservation, and were lucky that there was a table available (we were quite late for lunch, so people already started to leave). Service was very friendly, and we immediately felt welcome! There was tap water on the table (and was refilled), which we appreciated immensly, as it was a very hot couple of …

#126 In Flanders Fields: Water en Vuur, Diksmuide (2)

Restaurant review #126 – Water & Vuur in Diksmuide is a restaurant at the foot of the IJzertoren (Flemish peace monument) in Diksmuide (48km from Bruges). The restaurant is situated in a renovated cargo boat, on the banks of the IJzer (Yser). During World War I, the front was mainly situated along the banks of the Yser. 2km from the restaurant, you can visit the ‘Dodengang‘ (Trenches of Death), with galleries and trenches in which soldiers fought during WWI. Water & Vuur is 23km from Ypres. We’ve been to Water & Vuur several times over the years, and there’s already a previous review on our blog here. This review is from a recent visit in Spring of 2017. Water en Vuur literally translates as ‘Water and Fire’. It is not a vegan restaurant, but standardly has some vegan options, like seitan stew. The fries are baked in plant based oil. We know from previous visits that portions are rather big, so we didn’t order an appetizer. We were served this amuse gueule with our drinks, which was nice: The food was great. Always nicely presented, with …

#95 Seitan stew and portobello burger at Mosquito Coast, Ghent

Restaurant review #95 – Mosquito Coast is a travel restaurant in the city center of Ghent (in between the Korenmarkt and Vrijdagmarkt – close to the city hall). It is actually very close to Japanese restaurant Amatsu, which we also visited recently (see review here). I had seen it mentionned several times in some of the Belgian vegan facebookgroups, as a place where vegans also can have a meal. I wanted to go there with a friend and phoned to inquire. The guy at the telephone said they have one vegan dish standardly available (the seitan stew with croquettes) and several vegetarian dishes (turns out some of them can easlily be veganised). I had the seitan stew (17,75€). My friend had the portobello burger (13,75€) . We checked with the kitchen staff to know whether the bun of the portobello burger was vegan too (whether it didn’t contain dairy or eggs). Staff seemed to be taken by surprise by this question. After a while, one of the kitchen staff returned to say it was, that it ‘didn’t …
