#172 Light lunch at Bohio, Bruges

restaurant review #172 Bohio is a lunch bar in the city center of Bruges. It is in the Noordzandstraat, which, as you can already tell from the name, is a street leading to ‘t Zand. Bohio was originally in de Ezelstraat, but moved to this location a couple of weeks ago. When I was looking for Bohio, I found number 85 in the Noordzandstraat , and I found a shop with … clothes. Then I noticed the sign at the pavement pointing to the lunch bar, at the back of the clothes shop. So it is a bit tucked ayway from sight. It was a surprise to see it right next to a hair salon, also in the same space. UPDATE – see below There are several vegan options standardly available at Bohio, bowls, sandwiches, and salads. The bread of the sandwiches was said to be vegan. There is also vegan cake available, made by Chez Mariette. The plat du jour can always be veganised. And there are also fresh juices. This is what I had …

Thanks friends, for a lovely vegan dinner!

We were invited to dinner at friends recently. They are not vegan, but do not mind making us a lovely vegan menu. We’ve been there several times over the years, and it has always been a real treat. Not only the food in itself, but also the way they take the task of preparing a vegan meal seriously, and making sure there are no animal products in the dishes. Yes, even non-vegans can cook vegan 🙂 In the week leading to the dinner party, I received several facebook messages and e-mails from my friend, with queries about products and ingredients (even with photos of the list of ingredient included!). About the soy sauce, the curry paste, the oil for frying, the bouillon, and other things.  And I really don’t mind those questions, on the contrary! I always reply to a dinner invitation that I am more than happy to provide information about ingredients or products if they have any doubts or want to check with us to be sure. Rather they are open and honest about it, than just guess and knowingly or …

#4 Restaurant De Graankorrel, Ostend ****

Restaurant review #4 – De Graankorrel is a vegan/macrobiotic restaurant, in the city center of Ostend (29km from Bruges). It’s located behind the town hall, just a 10 minute walk from the sailing ship/museum ‘Mercator‘. Vegan Strangly, this place is not so well known among Belgian vegans. When asked about vegan restaurants in Belgium, most vegans will probably mention The Loving Hut in Louvain and Komkommertijd in Ghent. Most seem never to have heard of De Graankorrel, although it is very well known among Ostend locals since decades. I’ve also never encountered any tourists here. There also seems to be some confusion whether this restaurant is vegan – or even vegetarian – or not, some people saying the restaurant serves fish. I’ve visited this restaurant in Ostend several times during the last couple of years, and every time lunch was all vegan. I’ve enquired again on my last visit (January 2014), explicitly asking whether they sometimes serve fish or not and whether everything is vegan? The waitress (also the chef) assured me that everything is vegan and …
