A vegan look at Texel (the Netherlands)

A couple of weeks ago, we were in Texel for a couple of days. Texel is an island in the Netherlands, north west of Amsterdam. There are only a handfull of small villages on Texel, but the island is very touristic, so there are quite a lot of hotels and restaurants. Not that much options for vegans though. In previous blogposts with restaurant reviews, I promised I would give an overview of places where you can have a vegan meal (and also some restaurants that replied they cannot fullfill our vegan needs). You can see this overview below. First, some other impressions from Texel, from our vegan point of view. sheep, sheep and more sheep E-ve-ry-where you look on Texel, you see sheep. Thousands and thousands of them. Not that Texel is a sanctuary for sheep of course. They are raised for economic purposes: for their meat and milk, and also for wool. A museum filled with beach rubbish. Our visit to the Juttersmuseum in Texel (NL)

Growing up along the Belgian coast, I remember Winter beach walks and finding all sorts of stuff washed ashore. From ropes to driftwood, large barrels to plastic bottles. I didn’t know there are people who actually have a full time hobby collecting these items: beach combers. In Dutch they are called ‘strandjutters’ or ‘jutters’, hence the name of the museum on Texel: Juttersmuseum. It is said to be the largest collection of material collected through beach combing (jutten), with items found on the beaches of Texel over 75 years. Several beach combers donated their individual collection to the museum. If you think the only thing you would find at the Juttersmuseum are plastic bottles or boat ropes, think again. Just about everything has been found on the beaches of Texel: from TV’s to shoes, from helmets to bicycles, cars, inflatable dolls, bottles, children’s toys and even drugs. You name, it’s there. The barracks are literally packed from floor to ceiling and even the sheds themselves are (mainly) made from material found on the beaches. Wow. Time flies. We’ve posted 50 blogposts on The Bruges Vegan already! So decided it was time for a new profile pic. It’s the back of a T-shirt, from this shop: Freeandwild. I bought it at the vegan music festival Ieperfest (15€) some weeks ago, see our blog. I hope I still will get a chance to show it live this Summer! If only the sun would come out of hiding!  

No more ponies on Bruges annual funfair in May

On Friday May 9th, 2014, Bruges’ annual funfair ‘De Meifoor’ starts its 814th edition. About a hundred attractions occupy Bruges’ inner city markets for a couple of weeks (till June 1st). For the first time, there will be no attraction with live ponies on the Bruges Meifoor, according to reports in Het Nieuwsblad and Het Laatste Nieuws. Hurray! Finally! The Nieuwsblad captions “children will not be able to ‘enjoy’ a ride on real horses”. However, for the ponies, there is no enjoyment in it. In this funfair attraction, ponies walk little circles in a small arena for hours and hours on end. For a couple of euros, children can ride along on the ponies’ back for a couple of circles. The ponies have to endure the deafening music and bright scattering lights from surrounding fair attractions. Animal rights organisations have often protested against these pony attractions in several Belgian cities, and luckily, more and more cities are banning this attraction on their annual city funfairs. But the abscence of the pony attraction on the 2014 Meifoor in Bruges is not due to the city …

Bruges one of the 7 most romantic places in the world

Business Insider published an overview of seven of the most romantic places in the world. It includes exotic destinations like Bali in Indonesia, Fez in Morocco and the Greek Isles in the Mediterranean. Bruges in Belgium is listed second. Among other things, the article mentions the boatrides on the swan filled canals, the cobblestone streets** and the quaint houses as some of its romantic features. Business Insider also mentions the horse drawn carriages as one of the top attractions, which is something we would like to see ended in Bruges. Enough of other medieval things to see and admire in Bruges! As for gastronomical experiences, Business Insider points you to 3star Michelin restaurant De Karmeliet in the city center. Not your average restaurant, but I guess the readers of Business Insider must not be your average business(wo)men! Menu prices in De Karmeliet range from 85€ to 210€. You can get a vegan menu if you ask it well in advance. Maybe one day we will splash out and treat ourselves! But let us assure you that …
