#359 Nice traditional vegan dishes, Local, Maastricht (NL)

restaurant review #359 – Local is a traditional style restaurant/brasserie in the city center of Maastricht. It is really in the middle of the city center, at the market place. A lovely location, with a view at the city hall and a small terrace in front. Local has a couple of vegan listed options, some veganised dishes from traditional recipes like Zoervleis ( a sort of stew).
We were here in September of 2022 and had lunch on the terrace.

We had the vegan nachos as borrelhap (13€, appetizer). A HUGE portion!! I could have easily just had this as lunch!
The white sauce in a seperate bowl from the nachos really tasted like dairy though. We asked the waiter whether it was vegan and after having went to the kitchen he came back with a mayo sauce that was said to be vegan and apologised for the mistake.

As main dishes we had the Zoervleis (a sort of sweet stew in brown sauce, 18,5€) and the ‘fish and chips’ (18,5€).
The ‘Zoervleis’ is listed as vega (vegetarian) on the menu, but was said to be vegan.

The Zoervleis was OK. Nice salad on the side. But it did contain a white dressing, so after the mistake earlier, did make us doubt whether this was vegan? But it was confirmed vegan.

The ‘Fish’ is a breaded filet. Lots of fries and a salad.

We had a nice lunch, relaxed on the terrace. Friendly service. Nice to see some other vegan options than the burgers, sweet potato fries or quinia/avocado salads which are more common.

Interior is not accessible and toilets are upstairs, via a very steep and turning set of stairs (not easy! – and I forgot a pic of the toilets this visit). Most seatings inside are with high chairs, not so accessible for many people with mobility issues (I’m glad we could sit on the terrace).

All in all: we had a nice lunch. On the expensive side, but a nice view and vibe on the terrace. Double check the sauces!
