Restaurant Review #117 – The Loving Hut is an international chain of vegan restaurants. We have visited several Loving Huts over the years (in New York, Brighton, Maastricht and Louvain) and despite all holding the same name (and serving no alchol), the cuisine and setting of the respective restaurant varies enormously.
This Loving Hut was the first one of two Loving Huts in Louvain (see a review of the other one here), and opened a couple of years ago. I think it was in 2010. We have visited it several times over the years (see also some pics on my Dutch blog Graswortels of a visit way back in 2011 here), but now it had been a while since we last had lunch there. The Loving Hut Classic is near the city center, just a 5 minute walk from the City Hall or the Rector de Somerplein.
One thing that immediately caught our eye is that the very uncomfortable white stools have made room for chairs! Yeah! Although still not the most comfy chairs, these are way better than those backless stools 😉
It is not a big restaurant, and sometimes the place is packed (we were early and the restaurant had just opened for lunch, hence no other patrons on the photos).
There are menu cards at the tables (and suggestions on the chalkboard). One orders food at the counter, which is brought to the table. You can choose your drinks from the fridge next to the counter and take them with you. Afterwards your are expected to clear your table and put your tray in the trolley.
So it is mostly self service.
We had the seitan stew with croquettes (17€, was a suggestion of the day, written on the chalkboard) and the rice noodles with Loving Hut veggie strips (13,5€).
The food was nice. Although we had ordered the strip the spicy way, they were not spicy (when the cook came to bring the food she admitted that she had forgotten to spice them up, and brought some cilli sauce).
We definitely wanted to try some dessert, as there was tiramisu on offer! So we had a piece of tiramisu (5,5€) and home made pie (5€) which were both lovely!
We had a nice lunch. Overall, we feel it is a bit pricy, since it is mostly self service. The restaurant doesn’t really have a cosy feeling (bright lights) but is very clean (see also pics of toilets) and the menu doesn’t invite for elaborate wining and dining.
But the food is definitely great, and of course no worries here about the food possibly not being vegan!
