#196 Will not visit again. A vegan bite at pub The Lab, Maastricht

restaurant review #196 – The Lab is a restaurant in the city center of Maastricht, with some vegan options. Actually, it is more a pub/cocktail bar, than a real restaurant, with loud music and a dark, hipster pub atmosphere. It seemed very popular with students. We visited at the end of June, when we were on a holiday in the area. I doubted whether I would post this review on my blog, as The Lab is not a place that I recommend. But then again, I think it is also important to share less favourable experiences (see this blogpost: a critical note on vegan friendly places? don’t you dare) It is very rare that I am thoroughly disappointed about a place. As is the case here. When we came in, the first thing we noticed was a very strong ‘toilet’ odour (and not in a favourable way). There were still plenty of tables available and we could choose a table to sit. You can compose your bowl or choose from one of the available options. The …

A relaxed holiday at La Maison du Vert, Ticheville, France

Restaurant review #140  – La Maison du Vert is a vegetarian bed and breakfast in Normandy, France. In the evening, La Maison du Vert also opens as a restaurant to outside guests, so it could also be considered a hotel (although there are only 3 rooms for overnight stay). We spent a couple of days here at the beginning of Summer, after a short stay in Paris (La Maison du Vert is about a 2 and a half hour drive from Paris). We had made our reservation many months before going to Normandy, to be sure to have a room at La Maison du Vert. Vegan options are really scarce in Normandy, so it was comforting to know that we did not have to worry about breakfast or vegan dinner during our holiday. We were warmly welcomed by the hosts, Debbie and Daniel, a British couple who settled here 20 years ago and renovated what became la Maison du Vert and shaped the garden. After settling in in the room, we relaxed in the lovely …

#128 Lovely dinner at vegetarian resto Leaf, Rotterdam (NL)

Restaurant review #128 – Leaf is a vegetarian restaurant in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Most of the menu is vegan, there are only a handful of options which are non-vegan. The restaurant used to be in Scheveningen, but moved to Rotterdam recently. The food at Leaf seems to be a mixture of Asian inspired recipes (Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc). We visited a couple of weeks ago, with friends. We had made a reservation, but that didn’t seem to be necessary, as there was still plenty of space available (it was a Friday evening). Restaurant Leaf is a spacious place, with a large terrace out front. Although it was a nice Summer evening, it was too windy to sit outside. Inside there’s a downstairs section and some more seating on the balcony upstairs. It was hard to choose from the extensive menu! We’re not used to having so many options 😉 The non-vegan items are clearly indicated as such on the menu card, and the spicy ones are marked with stars. Restaurant Leaf offers a lot of ‘faux’ …

#67 Lovely vegan dinner at Réliva, Bruges (4) *****

Restaurant review #67 – Restaurant Réliva is one of our favourite places to go dining out in Bruges. It is not an all vegan restaurant, but one of the few places in Bruges where there’s standardly a vegan menu available. We have been here several times over the years, which is quite often actually, since it only opened in 2012! I have already written three reviews of restaurant Réliva. You can find those reviews, with many more photos of the food, the interior, and also the terrace at the back here. This review is from a visit in February 2016, when we were there with friends. There is a 3 course vegan menu (35€) or you can choose from two vegan starters and three vegan main courses. We were glad to see the menu had changed since our last visits, and were eager to try out the new dishes! For drinks I had a fresh vegetable juice 6€. Tonic was 2,50€. Our friends had a bottle of bio-vegan rosé, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo (25€). Good to see they have vegan labelled wine available, one …

A vegan look at Texel (the Netherlands)

A couple of weeks ago, we were in Texel for a couple of days. Texel is an island in the Netherlands, north west of Amsterdam. There are only a handfull of small villages on Texel, but the island is very touristic, so there are quite a lot of hotels and restaurants. Not that much options for vegans though. In previous blogposts with restaurant reviews, I promised I would give an overview of places where you can have a vegan meal (and also some restaurants that replied they cannot fullfill our vegan needs). You can see this overview below. First, some other impressions from Texel, from our vegan point of view. sheep, sheep and more sheep E-ve-ry-where you look on Texel, you see sheep. Thousands and thousands of them. Not that Texel is a sanctuary for sheep of course. They are raised for economic purposes: for their meat and milk, and also for wool. Hence sheep products like sheep meat, cheese and wool (and even sheep skins) are a common feature in restaurants and shops in Texel. We read online …
