#203 Vegan pizza at Pizza Break, Torhout

restaurant review #203 – Pizza break is a small pizza restaurant in the city center of Torhout (a mall town near the Belgian coast, not far from Ostend). We had heard about their vegan pizza option through social media. During one of our bicycle tours last Summer, we were in the area and went to check it out! Pizza Break is a rather small more fast food type place, not really for elaborate wining and dining. There’s also a small terrace in front. There was one vegan pizza noted on the menu (small 9€ or large 11€). I checked about the crust and was reassured it is vegan. So we ordered two large pizzas! We didn’t have to wait long for the pizza to be served. Huge pizzas, topped with plenty vegetables and vegan cheese. Aferwards, we chatted a while with the owner, on why he decided to add vegan pizza to the menu, and his search for good vegan cheese and a crust that bakes nicely and can hold the weight of all the vegetables. …

#191 Mango avocado salad at burgerbar Pistache, Valkenburg (NL)

restaurant review #191 – Valkenburg is a small town in the south of the Netherlands, near the Belgian border. We were here a couple of weeks ago, and also visited several restaurants in Maastricht at the time. The city center of Valkenburg is very touristic. Valkenburg is well known among cycling fans, as it is the place where the Amstel Gold race finishes. De ‘Grote Straat’ (the main street) is one restaurant next to the other, with all more or less the same – very traditional – menus (‘seafood, steak, lobsters, etc …). Very disappointing 😦 Also spotted this sign in one of the tourist shops). Beforehand, we had found references of two other places in Valkenburg with vegan options (El Castillo, and Eten bij Ziza), but both are closed for lunch. We suddenly saw a sign at the wall of a restaurant with ‘vegan wine’ written on it, so that was a pleasant surprise. We asked the waitress if they had any vegan options on the menu, and they have one: a salad with …

#89 Nice vegan dish at Bistro Belle de Jour, Ostend ****

Restaurant review #89 – Bistro Belle de Jour is a small place in one of the quiet streets of the city center, at the back of cultural centre De Grote Post. (update: new location 2019 see below). It’s a two minute walk from shopping street Kappelestraat, I had inquired some time ago whether vegan was possible, and that was said to be no problem. So when making the reservation, I requested this again. Communication on the phone didn’t go very smooth (the lady answering didn’t seem to understand Flemish very well), so we were a bit anxious to go. But we were quickly reassured upon arrival. Chef Els came personally to give us some vegan suggestions, based on the vegetarian dishes of the day (listed on the chalk board) and what’s available in the kitchen. We were seated at a little table at the window, with antique glass vases on the windowstill. There is one large table in the middle, sharing space with others. When we make a reservation again, I would definitely ask for a private table, …

#57 Fabulous lunch at #HashtagFood in Bruges *****

Restaurant review #57 – Hashtag Food opened in 2014. It is in the city center, about 5 minute walk from the main market square, close to the shopping street and just around the corner of Simon Stevinsquare. (Update: see below, new address since end 2017, now at edge of city) It’s a bright and very spacious place (they could have easily cramped in another half a dozen or so tables, but luckily they didn’t. Now you can breathe!). It looks hip and trendy! The table place mats are old records, which immediately gives you something to talk about 🙂 As do the names of the dishes! The menu is more bistro style (note that it also closes at 8PM). There are several vegan items standardly available, and some dishes that can easily be veganised. You can see the menu (in English) here. The chef did tell us that the menu changes every once in a while, and there would be a vegan pasta available soon. Both the waiter and the chef were very friendly and knowledgeable about what vegans means, which gave us …
