#139 Hustle and bustle in Soho. Dinner at Mildreds, London

Restaurant review #139 – Mildreds is a vegetarian restaurant in London, and has four locations: Soho, Camden, Kings Cross and Dalston. We went to the one in Soho during our short trip to London this Summer. It is in the south side of Soho, near the very busy Piccadilly Circus. We could not make a reservation, as the restaurant has a no booking policy (which we do find quite annoying, and has left us avoiding certain places in the past). But we had no other dinner plans for that first evening in London, and the restaurant was not too far from out hotel, so we headed there early hoping to get a spot. We arrived a bit before 6PM, and luckily, there was still space. Vegan options are clearly indicated on the menu and the wine list also clearly indicates the vegan wines (I think they were all vegan). We were served free water, which was nice! Glass of wine was £5,5. This what we had for dinner: Gyoza dumplings, £6 Hummus, £6 Wood roasted …

#128 Lovely dinner at vegetarian resto Leaf, Rotterdam (NL)

Restaurant review #128 – Leaf is a vegetarian restaurant in Rotterdam (the Netherlands). Most of the menu is vegan, there are only a handful of options which are non-vegan. The restaurant used to be in Scheveningen, but moved to Rotterdam recently. The food at Leaf seems to be a mixture of Asian inspired recipes (Indonesian, Chinese, Vietnamese, etc). We visited a couple of weeks ago, with friends. We had made a reservation, but that didn’t seem to be necessary, as there was still plenty of space available (it was a Friday evening). Restaurant Leaf is a spacious place, with a large terrace out front. Although it was a nice Summer evening, it was too windy to sit outside. Inside there’s a downstairs section and some more seating on the balcony upstairs. It was hard to choose from the extensive menu! We’re not used to having so many options 😉 The non-vegan items are clearly indicated as such on the menu card, and the spicy ones are marked with stars. Restaurant Leaf offers a lot of ‘faux’ …

#124 Fancy a double burger? Vegan Junk Food Bar, Amsterdam

restaurant review #124 – Vegan Junk Food Bar is a new place in Amsterdam (opened Spring 2017). It is located just north of the Vondelpark, overlooking a quiet square. Well the name says it all! It’s all vegan and it’s junkfood! 🙂 There’s a small terrace in front of the restaurant and some beach chairs. When we arrived, all seats were taken, but soon after, some people left from the terrace, and we could sit outside (it was a very hot day in Amsterdam and we were glad to be sitting on the shady terrace!). It is semi self service: one orders at the counter and then the food is brought to your table. This is what we had: a double sumo burger (9,50€, with two burgers, cheese, fried onion rings, lettuce, baked onions and sauce) and the shoama sandwich (8,50€). Two portions of fries on the side, one with mayo and one with garlic sauce (3€ + sauce 0,75€, each). For drinks we had several lemonades and a coke (ranging between 2,50 and 3€) …

#106 Nice dinner and service at Xu’s Cooking, Vienna

Restaurant Review #106. This is the last restaurant review from our visit to Vienna in Austria last Summer. Here’s an overview of all the restaurants we visited in Vienna. Xu’s Cooking is a vegetarian Taiwanese restaurant on the edge of city center of Vienna. It is a spacious place, with a terrace outside. The interior did ooze a bit of a somber and outdated atmosphere though. Xu’s Cooking has a buffet at lunch time, but we were here for dinner. There is a very extensive menu list. Most dishes are vegan (non-vegan dishes are labelled with a *). There are a lot of dishes with mock meats and ‘fish’. Not being used to so much variety on a menu list any more, it was hard to choose! This is what we had: We were too stuffed for desserts, but were served some banana balls and hot drinks anyway! A very enjoyable dining out experience. Although I am no fan of labelling and especially shaping vegan foods as ‘fish’ or ‘chicken’ (I understand it lowers the treshold …

#97 – Taiwanese dinner at veggie resto Vegetasia, Vienna. A bit of a bummer

Restaurant review #97 – Vegetasia is a vegetarian restaurant in Vienna. We visited Vegetasia earlier this year, during a short stay in Austria’s capital (see other reviews from our trip to Vienna). Vegetasia has a very extensive menu, with lots of ‘mock meat’ dishes (duck, chicken, ..). It was hard to choose. We have seen this restaurant being called a vegan restaurant on several fora, but there are still desserts with cow’s milk on the menu. This is what we ordered: corn creme soup with ‘crab’ pieces (4,50€), fried seaweed (5€). Main dishes Te pan yaki with soy (13€) and mock duck with mushrooms (13,50€), both served with white rice. Sparkling water (33cL) was 3,90€ and a glass of lemon soda 3,50€. The soup was very disappointing. It was quite tasteless, and had only some miniscule ‘crab’ pieces. The algae were not really fried. The mock duck was a large portion. It was nice, but after a couple of slices, it became rather monotone to eat. The tipan dish was nice, but not overwhelming. The interior is really …
