restaurant review #264 – This review is from a restaurant visit to Madonna a couple of months ago at the beginning of 2020, just before the lockdown measures due to the COVID19 pandemic started. Madonna is a vegetarian restaurant in the city center of Ghent, near the Sint-Michiels church. We were here on a weekday for dinner. The restaurant room is spacious, and is old-style with lots of wood on the walls and a high ceiling. A rather dark atmosphere. Wooden chairs (not so comfy). The tapas menu (21€ pp) is the only option (next to that you can choose some small appetizers like olives or nuts, and desserts). It was said to be no problem to veganize the tapas menu (see photo of menu).
restaurant review #262 – It’s been a while since I posted. And this review is from a restaurant visit a couple of months ago, just before the lockdown measures due to the COVID19 pandemic started. Epiphany’s kitchen opened at the end of 2018. The restaurant is situated in the city center, next to the medieval castle Gravensteen. We visited mid January 2020, on a Sunday, for lunch. We made a reservation, and that was absolutely necessary, as the place soon filled, and patrons had to be turned away. The interior at Epiphany’s kitchen is very nice. It’s and Instagram worthy decor 😉
restaurant review #260 – We were in Zoetermeer last Summer to go to a music show (Riverside, see clip below) and met with friends before the show to have an early dinner. Woodstone is located in the city center of Zoetermeer, in the corner of the square, with a terrace in front. It was the hottest day of the year (40°), so we were glad that it was much cooler inside the restaurant.
restaurant review #259 – Vegan Heroes is a vegan popup restaurant and is situated in a setting near the station of Tilburg (the Netherlands), sharing the place with some other start up restos (non-vegan). If their start up goes fine, they plan on opening a permanent restaurant in Tilburg. Vegan Heroes also has a setting in Eindhoven.
restaurant review #258 – Schenkers is a café/restaurant in the city center of Apeldoorn. It is a cosy place, with a very large terrace. We were here a couple of months ago in Summer, during our holiday in the Netherlands. It was a nice Summer day, not too hot, not too cold, and we sat outside on the large terrace next to the restaurant. Schenkers has a handful of vegan options standardly available. Although the two girls serving the place were working as fast as they could (and were very friendly) ordering and serving (for all in all rather simple dishes) took quite a while. So I think they are understaffed. The vegan bitterballen, which we ordered as an apptizer with our drinks, came together with the main dishes. The burger came in a slice of bread, which was a bit disappointing. It tasted good though. The falafel bowl was nice. All very reasonably priced (cheap actually). The restaurant room is wheelchair accessible. Didn’t see a wheelchair accessible toilet. The toilet was basic, but clean. …
restaurant review #257 – Restaurant BEO Versbar is a vegan restaurant in the city center of Ghent, near the Belfry. The restaurant is at the back of the BEO Versmarkt (an organic shop – selling organic produce – lots of stuff in bulk too). The shop BEO Versmarkt is not all vegan, but the restaurant BEO Versbar is (PS: ‘Vers’ means ‘fresh’, so using fresh produce). We were here a couple of weeks ago, at the end of Summer.
restaurant review #256 – Aguaribay is a vegetarian restaurant in the El Poblenou area of Barcelona. It is not far from the beach. We visited a couple of months ago, when we were in Barcelona for the EACAS conference (European Association of Critical Animal Studies). We were too early for lunch (starts at 1PM) but we could get a sandwich with hummus and tomatoes, which was nice.
restaurant review #255 – Japanese restaurant Origami is located at the back of the new shopping center. There is a large outdoor terrace, but we were here on a rainy day in September, so went inside. We were in the area for the International Animal Rights Conference, which takes places every year in September in Esch-sur-Alzette. On this edition I gave a presentation about ‘Representations of Other Animals. About Vegan Turkey and Voiceless Animals‘. We were asked if we wanted to sit at the carroussel, but declined (don’t want to see all those animal based dishes going by). There are plenty of other seatings in the restaurant room, it’s very spacious.
restaurant review 254 – Vegan Junkfood bar is a chain of vegan restaurants in the Netherlands. We had already visited another location of Vegan Junkfood Bar in Amsterdam in 2017 (the one above the Vondelpark) and liked the food! We were in the city center of Amsterdam in June, and wanted to try the downtown location on this visit.
restaurant review #252 – Mediamatic ETEN is the restaurant of Mediamatic Biotoop, an arts center organising lectures, workshops and art projects, focusing on nature, biotechnology and art+science. It is located in a greenhouse on the waterfront with a nice view over Amsterdam. It is not a vegan restaurant, but they do have a lot of vegan options (on some evenings all vegan) and many vegetables come from their own greenhouse.
