restaurant review #379 – Den Olifant is a traditional restaurant / lunch room in the city center of Ypres. This is from two visits last Winter (end 2022 and beginning 2023).

🌱🌱 Menu is digital (so no photo this time). Vegan options are clearly labelled on the menu and there is at least 1 vegan option for each course.
Had the soup (with coconut, 6€), vegan rice paper dumplings (with shiitakes, pumpkins, cashews, …19€) and hummus with baked mushrooms and toast (19€).
The soup came very swiftly, main dishes were a bit of a wait.

➡️ Really liked the food! And although it was simply hummus, it really tasted amazing because of the mushrooms and sauce. Soup was also very good.
I love that they have other dishes than burgers and bowls, and they also change the menu regularly.
There was also vegan dame blanche on the menu but we were stuffed.

On a second visit we had the vegan camembert as an appetizer. Really good! And again the hummus, and a dish with chickpea nuggets.

🏠Very nice atmosphere. Relaxed. Cosy. Very friendly service. Restaurant room is not accessible – steps to get in (maybe one can enter via the large terrace at the back).
Only one toilet, not accessible.

On our second visit we noticed a lonely bird in a cage in the hallway. Although one is always confronted with animal use in one form or another at non-vegan restaurants, I didn’t really like that …

All in all: great food, nice location, friendly, not accessible
