#100 Vegan fine dining at Vanilla Black, London (UK)

Restaurant review #100 – Reminder – GIVEAWAY to celebrate 100 restaurant reviews & 3 years The Bruges Vegan. Vanilla Black is a vegetarian restaurant in city center of London, near the Royal Courts of Justice. It is located in a small quiet alley. It is one of the more expensive vegetarian restaurants in London, and offers fine gastronomical dining. We telephoned to make a reservation for the same evening and that was no problem, although we had to be early (6PM all later hours were fully booked). We received a vegan menu card and also a vegan wine list. Nice! We ordered the 3 course vegan menu and could each choose different meals, even nicer! The 3 course dinner was £41,50. We started with a glass of champagne (drapier, £9,75). Water was £3,95, glass of wine was £9,75 (quite expensive drinks!). Here’s what we had for dinner. It was too much too take notes of all the ingredients, but every dish was very nice. Service was also very swift and friendly. Toilets downstairs were clean, although a bit unorderly. …

#93 Nice vegan dinner at Japanese restaurant Amatsu, Ghent

Restaurant review #93 – Amatsu is a Japanese restaurant in the city of center of Ghent (in between the Korenmarkt and Vrijdagmarkt – close to the city hall). I had seen restaurant Amatsu mentioned on one of the Belgian vegan facebook groups. Amatsu has a vegetarian menu standardly available, which can easily be veganised. A vegan friend telephoned and Amatsu said vegan was no problem, and so she made the reservation for the four of us (all vegans). It was a beautiful Summer evening and we sat on the terrace at the back of the restaurant (very spacious!). It was a Saturday evening and the terrace soon filled (so I definitely recommend making a reservation). Overview of our menu: (29€): The food was very nice. Lovely combinations, and some vegetables that are rather rare! I don’t have any photos from the interior of the restaurant, but walking through it on our way and out, it transpired a nice relaxing feeling. Toilet was clean. Nice tile colours too and a beautifull decorated sink (with flower print). We had a very …

#67 Lovely vegan dinner at Réliva, Bruges (4) *****

Restaurant review #67 – Restaurant Réliva is one of our favourite places to go dining out in Bruges. It is not an all vegan restaurant, but one of the few places in Bruges where there’s standardly a vegan menu available. We have been here several times over the years, which is quite often actually, since it only opened in 2012! I have already written three reviews of restaurant Réliva. You can find those reviews, with many more photos of the food, the interior, and also the terrace at the back here. This review is from a visit in February 2016, when we were there with friends. There is a 3 course vegan menu (35€) or you can choose from two vegan starters and three vegan main courses. We were glad to see the menu had changed since our last visits, and were eager to try out the new dishes! For drinks I had a fresh vegetable juice 6€. Tonic was 2,50€. Our friends had a bottle of bio-vegan rosé, Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo (25€). Good to see they have vegan labelled wine available, one …

Lovely vegan dinner at friends. Inspiration for a vegan festive menu!

A couple of weeks ago, we were invited for dinner at the house of vegan friends. We had such a lovely evening, and the food was great! So I thought I’d share the vegan menu we were served. If you are still looking for inspiration for a vegan festive menu for the coming holidays, take a look at this! For appetizers we had a trio of spreads with crackers: cashew-rucola spread, tapenade of sundried tomatos and basil and lentils apple spread. What followed was a little glass with a salad of quinoa, mango, avocado and cilantro (unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of this!). Then came leek and pumpkin cream soup. The starter was homemade (!) tagliatelle with forest mushrooms, peas and pieces of ‘bacon’, with a creamy sauce based on demi-glace and brandy. The main dish was a ‘beef wellington’ with tree variations of mushrooms and cashews, with béarnaise sauce. And mash of potatos and parsnip, and caramelised chicory and lentils on the side. Wow! By that time we were quite stuffed, but the desserts were so beautiful, we just had to …

#59 Fastfood lunch at the Loving Hut in Brighton (UK) ***

Restaurant review #59 – I’ve already posted several reviews of the restaurants we went to in Brighton during our mini break there this Summer (there is still one more to come!). Brighton has a large collection of vegan eateries and restaurants with vegan options. There are also two Loving Huts in Brighton, vegan restaurants that are part of an international chain. One of those Loving Huts is located in Gardner street, which is in the main shopping area of the city. And it is right across from the shop ‘Vegetarian Shoes‘, which I blogged about here. We were in the shopping area of Brighton on a Saturday, and the street was made into a pedestrain zone, with terraces in front of cafés and pubs. The weather was beautiful, so it was a nice atmosphere! We sat outside on the terrace of the Loving Hut to have a fastfood lunch! This was the menu: This is what we had. To start with, we shared a mixed platter: some soy chunks, spring rolls, … (£6,95). The special of the day was a pie with …

#58 Lovely dinner at Het Stadhuis (2), Oostburg (NL) ***

Restaurant review #58 – Het Stadhuis is a traditional restaurant in the south of the Netherlands, in the province of Zeeland. That’s very close to the Belgian border, and very close to Bruges (only about 30km = 20 miles). Restaurant and coffeehouse Het Stadhuis is in the center of Oostburg, a small town in the south of Zeeland. Every year in the beginning of October, Het Stadhuis participates in De Vegetarische restaurantweek, a campaign of the Dutch Vegetarian Association. During this week, you can have a vegetarian dinner in the participating restaurants for only 25€. Some restaurants offer a vegan menu, or you can have the menu veganised upon request, which is the case in Het Stadhuis (preferably ask it at least one day in advance to have it veganised). We already went to Het Stadhuis in 2013, also during the ‘Vegetarische restaurantweek‘, and we liked it a lot (see our review of that visit here, it was one of the first reviews on our blog!). This was the menu for De Vegetarische restaurantweek in October 2015 (we got a …

#56 ‘Fish n Chips’ at The Gourmet Girls vegan Pop up restaurant, Brighton, UK ***

Restaurant review #56 – Last Summer, we spent some days in and around Brighton, in the southeast of England (UK). Brighton is a vibrant but also quite touristic place. Brighton is known to be a hub for vegans, with several vegan and vegan friendly restaurants. That is also the main reason why we choose to go there this Summer! I already posted some reviews of the restaurants we went to in Brighton, but there are still some more to come! One of the places we went to was the pop up restaurant of the Gourmet Girls (from Titbits catering), which is held every Friday evening. It is located at an organic store ‘Fanny’s of Hanover’, which is a 15 minute walk from the train station of Brighton. I just noticed on their website that the last pop up restaurant will be on December 18, 2015, so be quick if you still want to check it out! You do need to make an advance booking. The menu of the pop up restaurant of the Gourmet Girls is always built …

#52 Our lunch at Little Asia in Brussels ***

Restaurant review #52 – Little Asia is well known Asian restaurant in the center of Brussels. Owner and chef is Quyên Truong Thi, who is reportedly famous for participating in several TV-cooking programs (I say reportedly, because I never watch these shows myself! – the day they become vegan, I just might 😉  ). The restaurant is just a 5 minutes walk from the stock market (La Bourse) and the concert hall Ancienne Belgique. Brussels is 100km from Bruges, and is the capital of Belgium. Little Asia has a vegetarian menu standardly available, so I mailed them with the question whether we could get a vegan menu (explaining what we do and don’t eat), and if conformed, we would like to make a reservation. The reply was that this was no problem and that we should mention it again to the staff when ordering. We were there one a Friday for lunch, with two friends (non-vegans) and the place was soon packed (full house). We asked the waitress about the use of eggs, dairy and oyster sauce or fish sauce and she …

#45 Vegan menu at Indonesian restaurant Lemon Grass, Tielt ***

Restaurant review #45 – A couple of weeks ago, we went to Indonesian restaurant Lemon Grass in Tielt. Tielt is a small provincial town in Western Flanders, about 35 km from Bruges. We love Indonesian food, and there are plenty of Indonesian restaurants in the Netherlands. Mostly it’s no problem to get a full vegan ricetable. So whenever we are in the Netherlands, we try to visit one. Unfortunately there are not that many Indonesian restaurants in Belgium, so we were pretty happy to see Lemon Grass open in Tielt recently! Looking at the menu, I saw a couple of dishes that I guessed were vegan. I called in advance to check, and indeed there are vegan options on the menu, so we made a reservation. Upon arriving, it seemed not really necessary to make a reservation (it was a midweek evening, we were alone at first, then another couple came in). It was quiet and relaxed. Upon checking with the waiter for ingredients (who was very knowledgeable about it!), we ordered the following: Springrolls with vegetables as a starter (6€). This is …

#35 Our most recent visits to restaurant Réliva (3), Bruges *****

Restaurant review #35 – Restaurant Réliva is one of the few restaurants in Bruges with vegan dishes standardly available. It is not a vegan restaurant, but there’s always a choice of two vegan main dishes and one whole vegan menu (35€ without drinks). We already blogged about our visits to Réliva when we first visited it at the end of 2013 here and our visit in 2014 here. (see edit below) Since then, we have dined four times at restaurant Réliva, on all but one occasion accompanied by friends or family. As restaurant Réliva also serves non-vegan menus, it is the ideal place to go to when you are in mixed company (with omnis). Here are some photos of what we had: You are always welcomed with a small appetizer, for example spicy hummus and kale soup, or on another occasion parsnip & kale soup and a mini spring roll. They now also explicitly state the bread to be vegan, which was sometimes overlooked in the beginning days. The vegan appetizer was either pumpkin soup or grilled sweet cauliflower …
