A couple of weeks ago, we were invited for dinner at the house of vegan friends. We had such a lovely evening, and the food was great! So I thought I’d share the vegan menu we were served. If you are still looking for inspiration for a vegan festive menu for the coming holidays, take a look at this! For appetizers we had a trio of spreads with crackers: cashew-rucola spread, tapenade of sundried tomatos and basil and lentils apple spread. What followed was a little glass with a salad of quinoa, mango, avocado and cilantro (unfortunately I forgot to take a photo of this!). Then came leek and pumpkin cream soup. The starter was homemade (!) tagliatelle with forest mushrooms, peas and pieces of ‘bacon’, with a creamy sauce based on demi-glace and brandy. The main dish was a ‘beef wellington’ with tree variations of mushrooms and cashews, with béarnaise sauce. And mash of potatos and parsnip, and caramelised chicory and lentils on the side. Wow! By that time we were quite stuffed, but the desserts were so beautiful, we just had to …
Restaurant review #3 – restaurant Patrick Devos always offers a vegetarian menu. We asked them whether it was possible to get a vegan menu (explaining what this means – what we do eat and don’t eat), and they affirmed! The vegan menu would be the same as the vegetarian menu, but without the dairy and eggs. A vegan 3- or 4-course menu is respectively 35€ and 45€ (with accompanying wines resp. 53€ and 69€). Shortly after, we called to make a reservation and mentioned ‘vegan’ again, and it was no problem. We could dine there the same evening. We hadn’t heard any other experiences from others about restaurant Patrick Devos, so we were pretty curious! The restaurant is in the center of Bruges, in the Zilverstraat.
Restaurant review #2 – Every year, in the beginning of October, there’s a Vegetarian restaurantweek in the Netherlands, a campaign from the Nederlandse Vegetariërsbond (Dutch Vegetarian Union). During that week, participating restaurants offer a vegetarian menu for 25 or 40 euro. We found three participating restaurants in Zeeland (the most southern province of the Netherlands), of which one on ‘our side’ of the water (the Scheldt)! Restaurant het Stadhuis in Oostburg, not too far from Bruges (29km).
Restaurant review #1 – Some British friends told us that in one of the small alleys not too far from ‘tZand, they’d seen a sign in front of a restaurant that mentioned ‘vegan’. What?? really??
