Our visit to Veggieworld 2017, Brussels

Veggieworld is an international vegan fair, that has been organised since 2011, in 8 different European countries. In October 2017, it was organised in Brussels for the first time. Veggieworld was located in Tour and Taxis. Nicely renovated old industrial buildings on the north side of Brussels. Parking just next door (a bit expensive, 7 euro, whether one was there for half an hour of half a day didn’t matter), good facilities (accessible toilets). Bright place, with high ceilings. It was unclear to us at first – going by the name – whether this was a vegan or vegetarian fair (it is vegan). We feel “Veganworld” would be a much more appropriate, clearer and better name. Veggie usually refers to vegetarianism, not veganism, so that is confusing. And using the word veggie instead of vegan makes ‘vegan’ less known and even sound more extreme (see our post: just say the word: vegan!). Admission was 8euro pp (10 euro on the day itself), which we felt was a reasonable price. Of course a free festival like …

A look inside vegan shop V|edge in Ghent

Shop review #11 – V|edge is an all vegan shop in Ghent. It is located at the edge of the city center, near Sint-Annasquare. The concept store in Ghent is only open in the weekend, but you can also order online and have your shopping delivered at home. V|edge also delivers your shopping to delivery points in several cities, among which Bruges. Check their website for details. UPDATE: see below V|edge offers a variety of vegan products: vegan shoes, handbags, books, vegan cheeses, cookies, candy, energy bars, burgers, chocolate, and other goodies. It is a rather small shop, but they have many items that are otherwise no so easy to find in Belgium. We are not really into ‘meat or fish substitutes’ (the vegan scampis or burgers type of things). But because we hadn’t tasted Tofurky nor the sausages from File Roast yet, we bought some of those (the jury is still out on those, more about them later). Also some products from Gardein. We were very eager to try out the vegan cheese croquette’s from YASAI! V|edge’s homebrand though. Already tasted and much approved, …

Vegan Liegeois waffles!

Unhealthy. Yes, I know. Too much sugar. Yes, I realize. Not really ‘baking’ since I’m using a premade mixture. Yes, I confess. But I just couldn’t resist this premade mixture to make vegan waffes de Liège (a type of Belgian waffles). It had been several years since I had last eaten Liegeois waffles. These waffles (non vegan unfortunately) are sold at food stalls in nearly every Belgian city. I have even spent a whole summer selling these waffles (and ice-creams) at such a food stall at the Belgian coast as a teenager, earning some pocket money. Since going vegan around 2010, I hadn’t eaten any Liegeois waffles anymore, and although I’m planning to try different recipes myself, I just couldn’t resist trying out this premade mixture for vegan Liegeois waffles. It doesn’t require much effort. Even the pearl sugar is included in the mixture. Just add 125ml lukewarm soy milk and 120g plant butter to the 500gmixture, mingle for about 5 minutes, and the dough is ready for baking. I have a waffle iron with changeable irons, and …
