Vegan products at organic shop Luzerne, Beernem

Shop review #43 – Luzerne is an organic shop in Beernem, about 15 km from Bruges. Luzerne means lucerne or alfalfa. The shop was founded more than 25 years ago and although Beernem is a rather small town, organic shop Luzerne is quite well stocked with a wide variety of products (food, but also cleaning products and body and care products). Luzerne is also only 5 minutes from the exit on the E40 highway, so this is also a handy stop for vegans travelling through Belgium and looking for vegan products for on the road. There is always parking space available, as Luzerne is situated in a quiet street (and there are also some parking places in front of the shop on the pavement). And it is open on Sunday morning! When entering the shop, one is always warmly welcomed by Gerda who runs the shop, and she enthousiastically gives advice or helps out when looking for a specific product or brand. This is not a vegan shop, but there are many vegan products and organic brands …

#147 Nice vegan fastfood at VBurger, Camden, London

restaurant review #147 – VBurger is not really a restaurant, but a foodstall at Camden Market. There is a bench in front, so there are some seating places. As the name says, VBurger sells burgers, with a selection of different sauces and with vegan cheeze. Everything is vegan. We strolled through Camden market after our visit to the Jewish museum where we went to look at the Amy Winehouse Exhibition, which was really moving. Camden Market is very touristic and very busy. Not really our cup of tea. We briefly took in some of the atmosphere, but it was too much bling bling, crowded, and noisy for us. And most of it is paved in cobblestones, which is a pita when using a wheelchair. Our main motive was to find VBurger (and also to see the Amy Winehouse statue, which we spotted later on, see pic below) and luckily it was in the first market place that we passed. When we ordered, there were some available spots on the bench, so we could eat our …

#145 Vegan lunch at Café Manger, Louvain

restaurant review #145 – Café Manger is a brasserie/pub in the city center of Louvain, on the Oude Markt (old market). “Manger” is French for ‘to eat’, so it literally translates as a pub where you can eat. It is right across Lebanese restaurant Karamna, where we also went to a couple of weeks ago! We had to be in Louvain a couple of weeks ago, and just the day before we went, I saw an announcement in a vegan Belgian facebookgroep that Café Manger would standardly be serving a vegan option as a suggestion, starting the next day. In that same announcement (by one of the owners of the brasserie), it was also announced that the bread, soup of the day, and fries are vegan. And they have soy creamer for coffee. So that was lunch planned for the next day! 🙂 We arrived rather early for lunch, and as such, we were the first ones to try to vegan option at Café Manger! 😀 We had made a reservation, but that seemed not to be …

#55 Nice vegan dinner at De Zakkendrager in Utrecht, NL ***

Restaurant review #55 – De Zakkendrager is a traditional style restaurant in the city center of Utrecht (The Netherlands). It is just around the corner of the music temple Tivoli/Vredenburg. We were in Utrecht a couple of weeks ago, to visit VegfestNL, a vegan festival (see our review about that here). When we looked into the possibilities for dining out in Utrecht, Dutch friends mentionned De zakkendrager, as there are several vegetarian dishes available – veganisable, and they have had a vegan dinner there before. So I inquired beforehand by e-mail whether a vegan menu was possible, and it was no problem. But, we could not make a reservation, as they only accept reservations for parties bigger than five persons. Taking our chances, we went on a Sunday evening, and arrived about 6pm. We were lucky there were still some tables available, and the restaurant soon filled up! The restaurant is located in a small alley in between the canal and the market, and was a meeting point and café for “zakkendragers” for many centuries. “Zakkendrager” means bag carrier or …
