#9 Restaurant Réliva (2), Bruges ****

Restaurant review #9 – Restaurant Réliva is – so far as we know – the only restaurant in Bruges which has a vegan 3-course menu standardly available. It is not a vegan restaurant, but vegan is always on offer, and besides the 3-course vegan menu, there is sometimes also another vegan suggestion. We already visited Réliva in the Summer of 2013 (see our previous review here). And we liked it! (see edit below)

We recently went again for lunch (February 2014). We were there first, but the place soon filled up and was nearly full for lunch. So we suggest you definitely make a reservation (we overheard the waitress telling some other people it was already fully booked for dinner that night).
Both of the main courses of the ‘veggie’ menu were vegan so we could each have something different. We got a little appetizer of mushroom creme and basil with our drinks. And some bread and olive oil.

This was our 3-course menu (35€):

  • Pumpkin chestnut soup (organic) with some brandy and liquorice
  • * Lasagne (glutenfree) with minced tofu, pumpkin, leeks ‘cheese’sauce, with a salade with walnuts and edives on the side (Amanprana)
  • * Rice noodles with aioli, broccoli and wild forest mushrooms
  • Raw ‘chocolicious’ mousse

All of it was delicious! And more than enough. Only remark was that the soup was not really hot. But otherwise we enjoyed it very much. Service is very friendly and there are several brands of wine that can be ordered per glass (plenty to choose from). The glutenfree options are also clearly marked on the menu (I think everything from our menu was in fact glutenfree).
In the back of the restaurant there’s also a spacious outdoor terrace, looking at the Saint Salvator Church. We will definitely visit again!

EDIT: See several reviews HERE. Our last visit was beginning of 2017.
UPDATE Summer 2017: prices have increased, vegan options have decreased (only one vegan option), and strict and selective reservation policy (eg pay deposit to confirm reservation).

UPDATE 2022: Réliva is no longer serving vegan dishes, also not on request. So disappointing … 😦

    • It’s a ‘Leuvense stoof’ (Louvain stove) which in the old days was used for cooking and baking (and ironing too I think). I think the long irons on top are indeed waffle irons, or irons for cookies (‘lukken’). We have similar antique long irons at home, but not such a beautiful Leuvense stoof unfortunately!

Everything looks amazing! We have a few vegetarian/vegan restaurants in Dallas/Fort Worth and I am very much looking forward to trying a dish I don’t have to modify.

  2. This restaurant interior is stylish but a bit weird but I love, love the creative vegan dishes here,…the dishes lok truly appetizing too,….Yum Yum yummmm. A must do. 😃

  4. Beautiful photos! I enjoy looking at vegan food because it looks as delicious as it tastes and it is a compassionate lifestyle. We have enjoyed several wonderful vegan restaurants in NYC. Please take a look at my latest post, vegan food at a little diner in Brooklyn …

    • Nice to hear from you Carmen 🙂 I had already found your daughters blog, following yours now also!
We were in New York a couple of years ago, and enjoyed the vegan food very much. We went to Candle 79, Blossom, Peacefood Café, Angelica kitchen among others. Delicious! Would love to go back one day!
